My Life  Who are you?
Geraldine Maurice  I am a natural born teacher in and out of the classroom setting. Teaching is my vocation.  A commit that I have made with our world and most importantly our children. My drive is fueled by my dedication to instill a lifelong love of learning. I am committed to creating a classroom and home environment that provides each child with the opportunity to meet his or her greatest potential in both mind and character. I work  to achieve that goal through the implementation of challenging child-centered activities, authentic assessment techniques designed to measure each student’s individual success and the integration of current technology throughout the sessions. My focus revolves around serving students with special needs and helping them achieve their goals.

Children coming from minority groups are more likely to be identified as having special needs. Over the past 30 years, we have been advocating for the fair and equal education of our children.
Problem Statement The differences that special education policy makes between  School Districts who have had high increase in African American Male Special Education students versus School Districts who had a low/constant number.
Literature Review Brandon and Brown(2009), complied a list of strategies to increase African American parent involvement. Increasing parent involvement  allow the African American parents to help reduce the overrepresentation of African American children in special education.
(Shippen, Curtis, & Miller, 2009),investigated the opinions of general educators, special educators and school counselors on the subject of overrepresentation of minorities in special education programs. The qualitative analysis  studied the extent to which the stakeholders views related or did not relate to systematic bias.
 (Jackson & Moore III, 2008), examined new approaches to address inequalities in education for African American Males.  The contributors of this article were asked to move beyond  Brown v. Board of Education (1954) to examine the collection of variables  that may explain the general condition of African American males in education.
Terry, (2007), reviewed a book entitled Keeping Black Boys Out of Special Education written by Jawanza Kunjufu. This review discusses the disproportionate number of Black males who are being referred to special education throughout the United States. The article states that Black boys are placed in special education four times more than Black girls. The research discusses s how gender and racial prejudice lead to  disproportionate placement of Black boys in special education.
 (Dyson & Gallannaugh, 2008), compared  the disproportionality in special needs education in England and the United States. The authors argue that the disproportionality is a reality in England as well as in United States. The authors state that the  disproportionality  may be explained by real differences in the incidence of disability between social groups and or by the inappropriate interpretation of ethnic and cultural difference as a disability.

  • 3. Geraldine Maurice I am a natural born teacher in and out of the classroom setting. Teaching is my vocation. A commit that I have made with our world and most importantly our children. My drive is fueled by my dedication to instill a lifelong love of learning. I am committed to creating a classroom and home environment that provides each child with the opportunity to meet his or her greatest potential in both mind and character. I work to achieve that goal through the implementation of challenging child-centered activities, authentic assessment techniques designed to measure each student’s individual success and the integration of current technology throughout the sessions. My focus revolves around serving students with special needs and helping them achieve their goals.

  • 5. Children coming from minority groups are more likely to be identified as having special needs. Over the past 30 years, we have been advocating for the fair and equal education of our children.
  • 6. Problem Statement The differences that special education policy makes between School Districts who have had high increase in African American Male Special Education students versus School Districts who had a low/constant number.
  • 7. Literature Review Brandon and Brown(2009), complied a list of strategies to increase African American parent involvement. Increasing parent involvement allow the African American parents to help reduce the overrepresentation of African American children in special education.
  • 8. (Shippen, Curtis, & Miller, 2009),investigated the opinions of general educators, special educators and school counselors on the subject of overrepresentation of minorities in special education programs. The qualitative analysis studied the extent to which the stakeholders views related or did not relate to systematic bias.
  • 9. (Jackson & Moore III, 2008), examined new approaches to address inequalities in education for African American Males. The contributors of this article were asked to move beyond Brown v. Board of Education (1954) to examine the collection of variables that may explain the general condition of African American males in education.
  • 10. Terry, (2007), reviewed a book entitled Keeping Black Boys Out of Special Education written by Jawanza Kunjufu. This review discusses the disproportionate number of Black males who are being referred to special education throughout the United States. The article states that Black boys are placed in special education four times more than Black girls. The research discusses s how gender and racial prejudice lead to disproportionate placement of Black boys in special education.
  • 11. (Dyson & Gallannaugh, 2008), compared the disproportionality in special needs education in England and the United States. The authors argue that the disproportionality is a reality in England as well as in United States. The authors state that the disproportionality may be explained by real differences in the incidence of disability between social groups and or by the inappropriate interpretation of ethnic and cultural difference as a disability.
