HOW TO USE
JING

First, let’s get to know
Jing

Jing is a computer program
that we can use to

do screencasting by
capturing a picture or
video

of our computer screen and
then allow us to upload

and share it through
the web

Now, let’s get started

On your desktop, choose
Google Chrome as your
browser

In the address bar, type
techsmith.com

Then press the
‘Enter’ key on your
keyboard

You’ll see the homepage

Click on ‘Products’

Click on ‘View All
Products’

Scroll down and locate
Jing

Click ‘Free
Download’

Choose ‘Windows
Download’

You can see the download
progress here

Click on this button when
download is completed

Click ‘Run’

Tick ‘I accept the fine print’

Click ‘Install’

Updating the system

Click ‘Finish’

You may watch this video

Or click ‘Get Started’

Fill up these fields

Type in your email

Your display name

Then your password

Choose your country

Then click ‘Create’

An image of a sun
will appear

Peeking out from the edge
of your screen

Move your cursor
over this image

And the fun part happens,
the sun transforms into this

Now, we can start
to use Jing

You may open a file, image
or webpage

that you want to capture
and annotate

As an example, have a
picture ready on your
screen

Click the first ray to capture
a part or the whole image

Or you may even capture
the whole screen

You’ll see two intersecting
lines like this

Click to start your
selection then drag and

release after you marked
the area to capture

Click the ‘Capture Image’
button

Change the file name here

Use these tools located at
the bottom of the image

You may choose to
‘Share via
Screencast.com’
…

Or ‘Save’ to your
computer

Or ‘Copy’ and then
paste where you
like

Or ‘Cancel’ if you
want to change it

Let’s say you choose to
share it via
Screencast.com

A link is automatically
saved to your clipboard

And you can paste
(Ctrl+V) it on your
email

Or in a chat box

The recipient can
immediately view the
image by clicking the
link

You will see this notice,
click here

And you’ll be directed to
the image at screencast.com

The same image that the
recipient will view

You can retrieve the image
by clicking ‘History’ (2nd
ray)

Here it is

Click on the file and choose
action from these buttons

View Share Delete

Note that when you
delete a capture from
‘history’

It will no longer be
available in
screencast.com

On the upper right
side of the page

you can filter files for
images,videos or both

Now, back to the tools at
the bottom of the image

Click this to save the
image to your
computer

Choose a location, then
click ‘Save’

You may opt to follow this

Or just open the file

To copy your
capture, click here

Then paste it wherever
you need to

If you changed your
mind or committed a
mistake, click ‘Cancel’

Let’s now use the tools at
the left of the image

Click this
to create
an arrow

Just click and drag

Click this
to add
text

Click and drag to create
the box

Then type your text
inside the box

Change the font style
here

Change the font size
here

And the font color here

Click this
to create
a frame

Click and drag to make
something like this

Click this to
highlight a
part of the
image

Highlighted portion

To change the
color for the
above tools,
click this

Pick the color
from here

Or customize
here

Select a color

Change the opacity here

Then click ‘OK’

Let’s try capturing a
video

There are two ways
we can do it

One is to capture a
playing video

The other one is to
capture a video of your

actions on the screen
and record the audio,
like a tutorial

or maybe just to
illustrate your point to
somebody

Let’s do the first one,
capturing a video

Move your cursor over the
sun and click capture

Click and drag to select the
area to capture

As indicated by this yellow
frame

Click here to capture the
video

Choose your microphone
here

Click ‘Continue’

The moving strips indicate
that video capture is active

Use this automatic timer as
a guide in starting your
video

So you may play the video
only when the timer has
gone off

Click here to turn
the mic on or off

Note that you can do five
minutes of recording

Click here to pause

And resume

Click here to stop

Click here to playback

Type in a filename

Choose your next actions
from here

After saving the file,
this notice will appear

If you choose to share, this
notice will appear

Press Ctrl+V on a
message that you will
send

And the link will be
received to access the
captured video

Let us try the second way
of capturing a video

which is a more visual
way of explaining your
thoughts

Open the page where
you want to start your
video

Click on ‘Capture’ ray

Select the area that
you want to cover in
the video

Click ‘Capture Video’

Turn the mic on if you are
recording a voice over

Your video is running

And it will record
everything you do on
the computer

as you move from
one page

to another

Click ‘Pause’ if you
need time to gather
your thoughts

Click ‘Resume’ when
you are ready to
continue

Click here when
finished

Now, you are ready to
share your screencast

The third ray opens the
door for more actions

This will appear

Click ‘Finish’ when you
are done

Click this if you want
to send feedback

Click here to adjust
preferences

To get some help, click
here

And lastly, click this to
exit Jing

You will be asked to
confirm exit
