Meaning
 Supervision is a democratic term
meaning ‘to see’ or ‘over see’ the
working of the schools.
 An administrator of the school
supervises his school in a way the
inspector of the school is supposed
to do it. Headmaster examines the
work of individual teachers posted
in that very school whereas the
inspector or supervisor sees in
general the proper functioning of
many schools which may include

 Creative supervision-
 The headmaster supervises the
school keeping in mind the aims of
supervision and nature of problems
. This type of supervision should
foster creative attitude among
teachers .
 Corrective Supervision;
 The function of this supervision is
to locate and then remove the
drawbacks of teachers.

 In this type of supervision the
supervisor do not interfere in the
working of teachers.
 Coercive Supervision
 Also known as autocratic
supervision .in this kind of
supervision , teaching works and
the methods of teaching are pre
planned . The supervisor can adopt
strict and hard attempts to improve
the teaching of teachers .
 Preventive Supervision
 The supervision tends to solve the
solution of problems related to
different activities of school and
help teachers and the headmasters
to in this direction.
 Democratic supervision
 This type of supervision
believes in the ideals of
democracy. The supervision
does not treat himself as an
authority rather he tries to
corporate with others.

 Distrust between the inspection
staff and school staff.
Suggestions
 Word Inspection should be
replaced by supervision.
 Supervisor should have experience
of school life.
 Supervisor should discourage and
type of pomp and show shown in
school.
 Suggestions of teachers/heads
should be accepted.
 Supervision should not be one man
job.

Supervision in Education

Meaning  Supervision is a democratic term meaning ‘to see’ or ‘over see’ the working of the schools.  An administrator of the school supervises his school in a way the inspector of the school is supposed to do it. Headmaster examines the work of individual teachers posted in that very school whereas the inspector or supervisor sees in general the proper functioning of many schools which may include Headmasters and large number of
  • 3. Definition  “Supervisor is a leader or Administrator with special skills in the area of curriculum development and improvement” - Campbell  “Supervision is assistance in development Of a better teaching learning situation.” -
  • 4. Types of Supervision  Creative supervision-  The headmaster supervises the school keeping in mind the aims of supervision and nature of problems . This type of supervision should foster creative attitude among teachers .  Corrective Supervision;  The function of this supervision is to locate and then remove the drawbacks of teachers.
  • 5. Continued..  Laizze fair supervision  In this type of supervision the supervisor do not interfere in the working of teachers.  Coercive Supervision  Also known as autocratic supervision .in this kind of supervision , teaching works and the methods of teaching are pre planned . The supervisor can adopt strict and hard attempts to improve the teaching of teachers .
  • 6.  Preventive Supervision  The supervision tends to solve the solution of problems related to different activities of school and help teachers and the headmasters to in this direction.  Democratic supervision  This type of supervision believes in the ideals of democracy. The supervision does not treat himself as an authority rather he tries to corporate with others.

  • 11. Defects In Present Day Supervision The Following are the defects in the supervision and inspection prevailing today:  Unstable Supervisions.  All Pomp And Show  Centralisation Of Policies  Mare Concerned With Administrative Work  Excessive Load of Work  No Subject Expert  Dictatorial
  • 12. Continued..  Interference by private Management  Present day inspection is complete in itself.  Distrust between the inspection staff and school staff.
  • 13. Suggestions  Word Inspection should be replaced by supervision.  Supervisor should have experience of school life.  Supervisor should discourage and type of pomp and show shown in school.  Suggestions of teachers/heads should be accepted.  Supervision should not be one man job.
  • 14. Continued..  Work load of supervisory staff should be according to norms.  Good Co-operation and Coordination between different school and office of supervisors.  Supervisors should not injure feeling of anybody.  Proper Training of supervisory staff.
