Virtual desktop infrastructure

  1. 1. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure What is virtual desktop infrastructure  Desktop virtualization is software technology that separates the desktop environment and associated application software from the physical client device that is used to access it. Desktop virtualization can be used in conjunction with application virtualization and (Windows) user profile management systems, now termed "user virtualization," to provide a comprehensive desktop environment management system. In this mode, all the components of the desktop are virtualized, which allows for a highly flexible and much more secure desktop delivery model. It is just like a group of desktop computers which are virtualized. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a desktop-centric service that hosts user desktop environments on remote servers and/or blade PCs, which are accessed over a network using a remote display protocol. A connection brokering service is used to connect users to their assigned desktop sessions. For users, this means they can access their desktop from any location, without being tied to a single client device.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure  The fig is showing the actual working of virtual desktop:-  Here Active Directory (AD) is a directory service implemented by Microsoft for Windows domain networks. It is included in most Windows Server operating systems.  The motive behind VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) is to run desktop operating system and applications inside virtual machines that resides on servers in the datacenter.  This is referred to as virtual desktop.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Architectural Overview The virtual desktop infrastructure creates a framework that offers many advantages to the enterprise such as : Cost Reduction efficient use of resources can increase utilization. Flexibility A common physical infrastructure can support a variety of end-users. Security The data remains in the datacenter with access control. Availability Due to higher availability as virtual machine can be quickly migrated to a different physical server in the event of a hardware failure. Efficiency Service delivery is more efficient when IT processes are optimized for a centralized environment.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Enterprise Level This VDI provides a group of proven integration patterns and methods for implementing a client virtualization. VDI solution (shared device, virtual client, workstation blades) is shaped by the component selection. VDI is generally used to reference the collection of products and infrastructure components used to form a virtual desktop solution. VDI is designed to reduce the dependency on distributed PC and laptops. The VDI end user desktops runs on virtual machines hosted in a centralized IT infrastructure in the client datacenter. The VDI provides the increased security as no data leaves the data center. Optional secure encapsulation capabilities can allow network connections to be encrypted.
