Ancient egypt
1.
2. The civilization of ancient Egypt existed between 32
B.C.E and the beginning of the common era . It could
be found near the Nile River. It is still interesting to
learn about their writing, how they grew crops, the
society and its legacies.
3. Writing
The ancient Egyptians were the first people to invent writing. They wrote on
papyrus, which is where we get the English word for paper. They made
papyrus by cutting the roots to make a square like 5 rows and 5 way down
then hitting it with a hammer (so some liquid came out from root help it stick
batter). Before papyrus, the Egyptians wrote on rocks. When Napoleon
attacked ancient Egypt he found a piece they called the Rosetta stone. The
top part has ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs (picture writing), the middle part is
written in demotic style (the next type of Egyptian writing) and the lowest
part was written in Greek. Scientists used this stone to figure out the
meaning and rules of Egyptian writing. There were people called scribes who
were specially trained to read and write. Hieroglyphs was a picture language.
But later signs were used to stand for sounds. The signs were like an
alphabet. Modern and ancient Egyptian writing is very different.
4. Food & Agriculture
In ancient Egypt they grow many types of foods. People grew
crops like
wheat, barley, flax, fruit, vegetable, onions, garlic, dates and
grapes. Rich people ate a lot of meat but it was too expensive
for poor people. The farmers waited for the Nile river to flood
because it made the ground good for growing. However, the
ancient Egyptians had no way of knowing when the Nile would
flood so they looked at sky so they could find patterns which
helped them to predict the floods. So you can see that the food
in ancient Egypt depended on the Nile River.
5. Society
In ancient Egypt there was a Pharaoh who was at the top of society and
slaves as the lowest people. Egyptians called their king Pharaoh. They
thought the Pharaoh was a gift to them from the gods. Nobles, grand viziers
of upper and lower Egypt, high priests and high priestesses came next.
Soldiers had dangerous lives. The vizier was the pharaoh’s chief helper, while
the priests worked in the temples, looking after the god.
Craftsmen, artists, scribes and tax collectors came next in importance.
However, most Egyptians were peasants. Their job was to grow food for life
or give it to the Pharaoh. So in ancient Egypt, society was structured like a big
pyramid.
6. Legacies
There are many legacies from ancient Egypt. The grandfather of
all ships was the ship of the sun. It was the first boat in the
world that they used to sand the mummies to cemetery of
Osiris. Paros is the first lighthouse in the world but we can’t look
at now because it broke down during two earthquakes in the
1308 and 1349 AD. The lighthouse was started to be built in 285
B.C.E and finish by 247 B.C.E at Alexandria port city. The ship of
the sun is found nearby Kupu pharaoh’s pyramid. Also writing.
