Exploratory testing (ET) consists of simultaneous learning, test design, test execution, and optimization. Most people are able to adopt the outward behaviors of ET but struggle to adopt an ET mindset. Griffin Jones explains that this mindset requires reflecting on four basic questions: Am I learning and adapting? Am I working on the correct mission? Should I redesign the task? Regulated software is consequential software, subject to authoritative outside review. Even experienced software testers can have an Alice-In-Wonderland feeling the first time they test a regulated product. Many aspects of software testing are surprisingly exactly the same as testing unregulated software, while others are surprisingly completely different. Why is that? What parts are surprisingly similar or different? Griffin shares experiences of testing FDA regulated systems, and similar software (e.g., financial systems, aircraft controls, insurance, and online gaming) – drawing examples from the participants of the Workshop on Regulated Software Testing (WREST), and himself. Feeble evidence and the behaviors associated with it are common testing maladies and threats to your ability to tell a compelling story. What are the qualities of strong evidence, and the anti-patterns and risks of weak evidence? Griffin Jones presents the different qualities and types of evidence. We review threats to the credibility and persuasiveness of your work, such as: The danger of false-negative results reported as “pass – as expected”, “Lullaby Language” as an anti-pattern of Lean’s Genchi Genbutsu (go-and-see), the danger of obsessing on efficiency and how it biases the observer. Finally, we show how over-scripted procedures can superficially conceal fatal evidentiary flaws. Be intentional and critical about the type and quality of your evidence. Leave with the skills to recognize and evaluate the dangers and risks, strengths and weaknesses of the evidence you use for your testing story.
