2. - Heterokonts is the name of a motile life cycle stage when cells possess
two different flagella that are shaped differently.
- Line of eukaryotes that has more than 100,000 species. These include:

4. -Oomycetes

Ex: Pythium (seed rot)
These two oomycetes are specifically water moulds.
5. Why are they important?
- Heterokontophyta are in the Kingdom Chromalveolata.
-Chromaveolata contain a lot of diatoms which create oxygen via
photosynthesis.
- Kelp creates underwater habitats for marine life.
- Kelp is also used as a food source for many marine and costal
organisms.
- Algin in brown algae is used to thicken ice cream.
- Silica in diatoms shells are used in reflective paint, toothpastes,
and filters for pools, fish tanks, beer, etc.

6. Misc. Information:
-Most heterkontophyta that can photosynthesize contain
chlorophyll a and c.
-The pigment fucoxanthin is what gives brown algae its color.
- Heterkont algae were considered in the kingdom Plantae but is
now in the kingdom Protista.
-Oomycetes was considered to be related to fungus but data
suggests that they are heterkonts.
- Heterkonts are also named stramenopile(original: straminopile)
from the Latin word stramen meaning made of straw.
-Note: many people liked the name stramenopile as
opposed to straminopile and use it more often. However,
both words are acceptible.
