John Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy in 1455 and became a merchant and skilled sailor. He wanted to explore across the Atlantic Ocean after other European kings had sponsored voyages. When the kings of Spain and Portugal refused to sponsor him, Cabot went to England and was sponsored by the English king. On his voyages sponsored by England, Cabot discovered Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Grand Banks in 1497.
