Child slavery remains a significant problem in West and Central Africa, where over 200,000 children work as slaves. Children are often kidnapped or their parents are persuaded to give them up in exchange for false promises of education or small cash payments. The enslaved children face long hours of difficult work, physical abuse, lack of schooling, and malnutrition. Organizations are working to rescue enslaved children and rehabilitate them through medical care, counseling, education, and life skills training at shelters.
