            period.


   Chandler, Haley, Delaney, and
               Sara.
North
• During 1800’s advances in
  technology/transportation shaped the
  North’s economy
• 80% of all railroads were in the North
• Many cities grew in the North
• Factories contributed to the North’s
  growing economy
Immigrants and Problems
• A lot of Irish and German immigrants progressed
  to the North
• The Irish moved because of the Potato famine
• The Germans moved due to the war
• They moved to the North to work in factories
• Factories were dangerous and whole cities were
  unsanitary, disease ridden, and filth covered.
South

• Cotton was vital to the Southern economy
• As cotton production increased, so did slavery
• The higher the price of cotton the higher the
  price of the slave
• The South’s people consisted of wealthy
  plantation owners, farmers, and slaves
• Slavery dominated much of the southern
  population
• 4 million slaves resided in the South
• The South produced 90% of worlds cotton
Compare
• Both had booming economies during the
  1800’s
• Both progressed in terms of technology
  and transportation
• Both grew rapidly in population
Contrast
• NORTH                • SOUTH
• Opposed slavery      • Pro-Slavery
• Had plenty of city   • Slaves over
  work                   populated whites
• Had bad sanitation   • Better sanitation
  compared to South    • More agricultural in
• Safety issues and      terms of progression
  health problems      • Had more land
  arose from over        therefore more room
  population/ unsafe     for general population
  equipment
