What are fossils fuels? There are three major forms of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. All three were formed many hundreds of millions of years ago before the time of the dinosaurs - hence the name fossil fuels. The age they were formed is called the Carboniferous Period. It was part of the Paleozoic Era. "Carboniferous" gets its name from carbon, the basic element in coal and other fossil fuels.
What are the different type of fossil fuels? The different type of fossil fuel are coal oil and natural gas.
How is coal formed? Coal is a hard, black colored rock-like substance. It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and varying amounts of sulphur.
Describe the different stages of coal formation. There are three main types of coal - anthracite, bituminous and lignite. Anthracite coal is the hardest and has more carbon, which gives it a higher energy content. Lignite is the softest and is low in carbon but high in hydrogen and oxygen content. Bituminous is in between.
How is coal used as a fossil fuel? It contains a high percentage of carbon and hydrocarbons. It was used by the Chinese people 3,000 years ago.
How is oil formed? Oil was formed from the remains of animals and plants (diatoms) that lived millions of years ago in a marine (water) environment before the dinosaurs. It was also formed more than 300 million years ago.
How is oil used as a fossil fuel? Oil has been used for more than 5,000-6,000 years. The ancient Sumerians, Assyrians and Babylonians used crude oil and asphalt. They used a fossil fuel because they have been used for a long time by the Assyrians and Babylonians.
How is natural gas formed? The main ingredient in natural gas is methane, a gas (or compound) composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Millions of years ago, the remains of plants and animals (diatoms) decayed and built up in thick layers.
How natural gas used as a fossil fuel? Natural gas is a combustible, gaseous mixture of simple hydrocarbon compounds, usually found in deep underground reservoirs formed by porous rock.
Exxon Valdez oil spill the oil spilled in march 24, 1989. In less than 4 hours, more than 6,700,000 gallons of oil had been spilled. Over the Exxon Valdez had spilled more than 11,000,000 gallons of oil. It’s the biggest clean up in history. A the day passed, the harder the oil to clean up. They used hot blast of water to clean them up. they recovered most plant and animals on the beaches were recovered after 4 years.
