A career in Bioinformatics
Meaning - Bioinformatics or Computational biology is the use of information technology in the field of molecular biology, or the application of computer technology to the management and analysis of biological data.  Computers are used to gather, store, analyze and merge biological data in this field. Biological information is collected and managed for and is used for the improvement in quality of life.  Bioinformatics has several applications in the fields of agriculture, health, environment, energy and biotechnology. In this, it promotes biomedical research and development.  Bioinformatics helps to produce better curative and preventive medicines, identify waste cleaning bacteria, and produce high yield low maintenance varieties of seeds.

Eligibility Career starts with a graduate degree in this subject for which the minimum qualification is 10+2 pass with Science subjects.  For getting admission in M.SC/M.Tech Bioinformatics candidate should have bachelor's degree in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary, Fishery Sciences, Horticulture, Pharmacy, Engineering, Technology or Medicine (MBBS/ BAMS / BHMS).  Admissions to all postgraduate and some of the graduate courses are through all India entrance exam conducted by different national and state level universities at multitude of centres.  In addition to this, students who have qualified the CSIR/UGC NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, GATE examinations for JRF-fellowship can directly apply for the interview, and need not appear in the written entrance examination. Apart from this, further specialization at postgraduate level and PhD can be pursued. A career in Bioinformatics requires excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, and good attention to detail. Familiarity with computers, software, and technology is also important.
