Assuming that we are heading for a very dry and hot summer starting in July, we will need to prevent the plants and shrubs from becoming parched.. This can be done by adding good organic matter to your borders which will hold the moisture. This is particularly important in light sandy and gritty soils. If you are planting tubs and pots, add moisture retaining gel granules which when watered will swell into a jelly from which the plant can draw moisture. If there is going to be a drought, you may like to consider more tolerant planting schemes which will thrive in dry soil. These may include Lavander or Santolina (cotton lavender) with silver foliage and yellow flowers, Rock Rose, Cistus, Brooms-Cystisus and Artemisia. Herbaceous perennials such as Oriental Poppies, Red Hot Pokers, Montbretia, Penstemon and a huge range of geraniums are also quite happy in dry soil. When cutting the lawn, set the height adjuster one notch higher. This will help prevent the grass drying out and keep it Photo. Back row. L to R.
