Why Is This Important?
Imagine that this is your first day at a new job. You have a
map to guide you to the building and keys to enter. Once
inside, you arrange your workspace and introduce yourself to
your co-workers. Along with filling out paperwork, these are
basic first steps that many take when new to a job.
Similarly, the Project Learning Institute requires some initial
steps for starting the course and becoming familiar with
project learning. The knowledge gained from this lesson will
help you find the Institute online meeting place, claim your
workspace, and meet your peers.

Navigating to the Project Learning
Institute in ThinkQuest Projects
An organization in ThinkQuest Projects exists for each
Project Learning Institute event and location. These are the
central meeting places for participants in each Institute.
To find the organization for your Project Learning Institute
event, follow these steps:
1. Click the World* tab
2. Click the Organizations link at the bottom of the page
3. Find your Institute event using the right arrow at the
bottom of the page to scroll through the list of
organizations
4. Click the title link for your Institute event and location
* Users in schools that have not selected the World Community option do not have access to the World tab

Accessing Your Team Project
Your Project Learning Institute organization contains multiple
projects. One of the projects, the team project (indicated by
your facilitator’s name), will be used for collaborative team
activities during virtual training. A quick link to your team
project is provided in ThinkQuest Projects.
To find your team project, follow these steps:
1. Click the My Home, My School, or World* tab
2. In the My Projects section on the left side of the page,
find your team project, which starts with the word Team
and includes your facilitator’s name
3. Click the title link for your team project to access it

Accessing Your Personal Project
Your Project Learning Institute organization contains multiple
projects. One of the projects, the personal project (indicated
by your name), belongs to you. A quick link to your personal
project is provided in ThinkQuest Projects.
To find your personal project, follow these steps:
1. Click the My Home, My School, or World* tab
2. In the My Projects section on the left side of the page,
find your personal project, which starts with the word
Personal and includes your name
3. Click the title link for your personal project to access it

Creating an Autobiography Page
in Your Personal Project
To add a page for your autobiography in your personal
project, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to your personal project
2. Click the + button in the Pages section on the left
3. Enter your full name in the title field
4. Select a color for your title (optional)
5. Upload an image file as your banner (optional)
6. Click the Save button to create your new page

An autobiography is a written
account of a person's life.
Building content on your
autobiography page allows your
peers at the Institute to learn
something about you.
To create an autobiography in your
personal project, you will use these
three content creation tools:
• Write
• Pictures
• Message Board

Using the Write Tool
to Add Autobiography Text
To add your autobiography text, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to your autobiography page
2. Move the cursor over the Write link at the top of the
page and click Text in the drop-down list
3. Enter Autobiography in the title field
5. Type two or three paragraphs about yourself in the text
field, including where you live, your job, and your
hobbies or interests
6. Select the Public Content radio button
7. Click the Save button

Using the Upload Tool to Add Pictures
To add pictures or photographs to your autobiography page,
follow these steps:
2. Move the cursor over the Upload link at the top of the
page and click Pictures in the drop-down list
3. Enter My Pictures in the title field
5. Use the Browse buttons to select up to three pictures to
upload
6. Add a caption for each picture
8. Click the Upload button

Using the Interact Tool
to Add a Message Board
To add a Message Board to your autobiography page, follow
these steps:
2. Move the cursor over the Interact link at the top of the
page and click Message Board in the drop-down list
3. Enter My Guestbook in the title field
5. Use the Description field to invite messages from your
peers at the Institute

Reviewing Your Autobiography
Review your autobiography page
and edit any items that need to be
corrected.
New content is always added at
the top of a page in ThinkQuest
Projects. For your autobiography
page, you need to change the
sequence of content to the
following:
• Autobiography text
• Pictures
• Message Board

Re-Sequencing Content On a Page
To change the order of content on your autobiography page,
follow these steps:
2. Click the Member tab at the top of the page, which gives
you access to the content editing tools
3. Use the up or down arrow under an item of content to
change its sequence on the page
4. When the sequence of content is correct, click the
Visitor tab to review what the page will look like to a
visitor

Reviewing and Responding
to Your Peers’ Autobiographies
Reviewing and commenting on the autobiographies of your
peers gives you the opportunity to meet them. You can ask
questions, note similarities in background, and so on.
To review a peer’s autobiography, follow these steps:
1. Navigate to the Project Learning Institute organization
for your event
2. Scroll through the list of projects using the right arrow at
the bottom of the page
3. Click on the title link for one of your peer’s personal
projects
4. Click on the title link of the autobiography page

6. Click the Post a Message button
7. Enter your message in the pop-up window
9. Review the message you have left in your peer’s
Message Board
