Vera Buchthal was a German Jewish girl who lost her family in 1933 and was sent to England as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. She grew up to be Stephanie Shirley, a pioneering female computer programmer who founded a software company in 1962. To succeed in the male-dominated industry, she used the name "Steve" on business calls. By 1980 her company was worth 150 million pounds, making her one of the richest women in Britain. She retired in 1993 and devoted her life to charity through her Shirley Foundation, particularly for autistic children like her son.
