       Formed: 1948

Functions
   To maintain and enforce the law impartially, and to protect life,

    liberty, property, human rights, and dignity of the members of the

    public;

   To promote and preserve public order;

   To protect internal security, to prevent and control terrorist

    activities, breaches of communal harmony, violent activities and

    other situations affecting Internal Security;

   To protect public properties including roads, railways, bridges,
    vital installations and establishments etc. against acts of
    vandalism, violence or any kind of attack;


   To prevent crimes, and reduce the opportunities for the
    commission of crimes through their own preventive action and
    measures as well as by aiding and cooperating with other
    relevant agencies in implementing due measures for prevention
    of crimes;

Duties
       Obey and execute all orders and warrants lawfully issued by any

        competent authority

       Collect and communicate intelligence affecting the public peace

       Prevent commission of offences and public nuisances

       Detect and bring offenders to justice

       Arrest all persons whom he is legally authorized to apprehend and

        for whose apprehension sufficient ground exists

  1.  It was formed in the year 1948 under the article 312 of the constitution of India. The IPS officers provide senior level leadership to police force both in the states and at the centre. The controlling authority is in the ministry of home affairs which is responsible for all cadre controls. In the year 1893 to 1948 it was knowing as imperial police services. In the year 2011 the cadre size was 4730. the service color of the ips is red n blue and the uniform color of their people is khaki
