Introduction
India has the largest youth population in the world that is poised to increase further in
the coming decade. 70% of India’s population is below the age of 35 years. According
to the initial figures of the 2011 census, the youth population in the country including
adolescents is around 550 million. The hunger, desire, motivation, determination and
high energy of the youth can make all the difference in either destroying or building a
nation. Youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also the partners of today. Young
people are social actors of change and progress. They are a crucial segment of a nation's
development. Their contribution, therefore, is highly needed thus youths play one of the
most important roles in nation building.Youth through organizing for a specific aim and
positive direction can contribute more towards the national development.
Who are youths???
 According to UNESCO:
The youth constitutes people between 15 and 24 years of age.
 According to Government of India:
youth as persons in age group of 15 to 35 years of age (Ministry of Youth and Sport
2003)
Life style
 Lifestyle is a picture for every person who wear it and illustrates how much the
moral values of people in surrounding communities. Or also, life style is an art
cultivated by everyone.
 Lifestyle is also very closely related to the times and technology. Increasing age
and increasingly sophisticated technology, the more widespread implementation of
lifestyle also by humans in everyday life.
 In another sense, lifestyle can give positive or negative effects for those who run
it. Well, depending on how that person worked.
Youth lifestyle
 FASHION – International & National brands (GUCCI, Levis, UCB, USI,
Converse shoes)
 LOOK – Hair styling, Skin Care, Accessories, Personality

Problems of youths
 Clashes with Religion
 Unemployment
 Poverty
 Materialism
 Parental Pressure
 Premature Sex
 Time Management
 LGBTQ Community Rights
Clashes with Religion
 There are a lot of young people out there who do not wish to accept things as they
are.
 There are people who do not believe in the concept of religion; they wish to do as
they please.
 They are governed by the principles of science rather than the principles of faith
and destiny.
 Not only are these people ridiculed by the society, their own families tend to treat
them as outcasts.
Unemployment
Unemployment meaning
Unemployment means a situation in which people are willing to work, at the existing rate
of wage, but they do not get work.
Causes of Unemployment
 Poverty
 Defective System Of Education
 Rapid Increase In Population
 Inadequate Development Of Agricultural Sector
 Slow Progress Of Economic Development
 Other Causes
Types of Unemployment
 Open Unemployment
 Under Unemployment
 Educated Unemployment
 Industrial Unemployment
 Seasonal Unemployment
 Structural Unemployment
 Open unemployment
It means the person does not get employment at all during the year. These person are
willing to work , have necessary skills, capability ,but they are not able to find the work.
 Under Unemployment
It means the person gets employment for a few months and remains unemployed for
some months. Secondly, it means person works at a job that is below his qualification.
 Educated unemployment
When educated people do not get job according to their educational standard it is called
educated unemployment.
 Industrial Unemployment
With the rapid growth of population and urbanisation, more people seek employment in
industries. Because of seasonal nature of agriculture, people from village come to urban
areas in search of industrial jobs.
 Seasonal Unemployment
It means a person is employed in a particular season and is unemployed in another
season. In India, it is very common in agriculture. Here persons get work in cropping and
harvesting season and in other months of the year, they remain unemployed. It is
estimated that a farmer who sows a single crop in a year remains unemployed generally
for 5 to 7 months.
 Structural Unemployment
This unemployment is because of technology changes or change in the demand pattern of
goods. It is possible that demand of new type of goods has increase or technological
advancement has taken place and labour does not have right skills to manufacture new
type of goods or work with new technology.
Effects of Unemployment
Suggestion for unemployment
 Check on population
 National employment policy
 Strengthening Information Technology sector
 Promoting rural non farm Activities
 More Industrialization
 Promotion of Exports
 Change in the Education system
Poverty
 Poverty and unemployment are like twins. It is difficult to distinguish them
completely.
 A person is poor because he is unemployed and if he is unemployed, poverty is natural
for him.
 Poverty impedes learning and contributes to social and behavioral problems.
 There is no income to counteract these problems.
 There is a huge opportunity for society to stop being so materialistic and in turn
poverty wouldn’t be such an issue because most children will all have the same things
things they need instead of what they want.
 This would decrease violence in schools because fewer kids would be teased.
Ragging in Schools and Colleges
 Schools and Colleges are an integral part of every youngster’s life. However, for
some the experience is fearsome; reason being, a bunch of bullies trying to get them.
 Bullying of children in schools and ragging by seniors in colleges are perhaps every
freshman’s nightmare.
 This problem can be combated with courage and wisdom, the victim can simply
report this matter to the police as ragging is illegal.
 In cases of bullying in schools, it is necessary that the matter should be reported to
parents and teachers as soon as possible.
 Educational institutions are a place to learn, such evils should not ruin the decorum
of the place.
Materialism
 Being materialistic is perceived to be a personal issue, however, it is the society
that promotes this materialistic nature.
 if the world stopped giving more respect to people who have a bigger car, a better
phone and more materialistic things, would you ever want to spend your money on
things such as these? Probably not; one of the biggest reasons youngsters succumb
to materialism is due to the expectations of the society.
 A man with a BMW will generally be given more respect by others when
compared to a man having a Maruti 800
Parental Pressure
 Parents of most youngsters want them to pursue academic careers, if someone
wishes to do something different (Such as Music and Fine Arts) the idea is
ridiculed and in worst cases, suppressed.
 Moreover, there is always a comparison made between the children, every parent
wants his/her child to be the best.
 This practice of comparison not only demoralizes the child but can also provoke
the youngster to go to any extreme level to prove that he/ she is better than the
others.
Time Management
 Coping with the various expectations of the society, such as scoring well in college
examinations, holding a job, having a good social life and so on makes life tough
for youngsters as they face the problem of time management.
 There are only 24 hours in a day, and it is sad that a young person is expected to
do so much in a limited time.
Premature Sex
 A lot of teenagers start developing curiosity about sex due to hormonal changes.
 Since Sex education is low in most of the countries, out of this curiosity, some of
them indulge in premature sex.
 Researches have shown that having sex in adolescence can have serious
consequences on body and mind, this is because the act takes place when the nervous
system is still developing.
 The effect may not be immediate but once the individual reaches adulthood, he/she
can experience health issues.
Lack of Sex Education
 There is an ardent need of Sex Education for the youth all over the world.
 The basic aim of Sex Education is to educate children about their gender identity,
physical changes that they undergo, sexual abuse, birth control, prevention of
AIDs and STDs.
 It is not just about the physical act. It is essential that children are aware of these
topics so that they are in a position to understand the way their body works and
live in perfect harmony with their body and soul.
LGBTQ Community Rights
 People belonging to the LGBTQ Community are truly the worst sufferers in our
society.
 Same sex marriages are illegal in most countries and acceptance of such couples is
almost 0.
 There is an effort to give some recognition to transgender, yet they are not accepted
with much dignity in the society.
Challenges of youths
 Health of youth
 Suicide in youths
 Corruption
 Reservation
 Terrorism
Health of youth
 Various behaviors of youth have long-term implications for their health.
 These include smoking, drinking alcohol, overeating, and sexual behavior. Each of
these activities carries some degree of risk.
 Risk taking is considered to be a characteristic of youth, and experimentation and
exploration are valuable parts of growing up. However, youth commonly
underestimate their risk of disease, accident, or vulnerability, and they often lack
knowledge about the consequences of their actions thereby exposing themselves to
serious health problems.
 Shortsightedness regarding the health effects of their behavior lies behind tobacco
and alcohol use by youth; increased incidence of overweight and obese youth; and
high rates of injury, especially from traffic accidents.
Suicide in youths
Suicide is now the second or third leading cause of death for youths. social interactions are
important the presence of social interactions means that small differences in aggregate
fundamentals can trigger large shifts in the number of youth suicides. Divorce rates at the
county, state, and national levels are highly correlated with youth-suicide rates. The divorce rate
is more highly correlated with youth suicides than is the share of children living with
stepparents or the share of children in single parent families in teen suicide.
Causes for suicide:
 Depression: the most common of the causes of teen suicide.
 Peer pressure.
 Financial problems.
 Substance abuse .
 Failure or loss such as breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, failing a big exam, or
witnessing family turmoil.
 Etc.
Suicide Prevention
 Actions from parents side.
 Talk about suicide.
 Avoid criticism.
 Show love to your young.
 Listen to your young.
 Keep lethal weapons out of home.
 Getting professional help in youth suicide prevention such as counseling.
Actions from friends side
 Take your friend’s actions seriously
 Encourage your friend to seek professional help, accompany if necessary
 Talk to an adult you trust. Don’t be alone in helping your friend.
Exams are important as their results influence future professional career, social status and
self–esteem. Every person has own optimal level of worry and anxiety, which helps him/
her to achieve the best results. We must learn how to control stress and extra anxiety for
preparing for the test. If exams cause great worry, and there are some symptoms of exam
stress (insomnia, rapid pulse, hands trembling and so on) we ought to do something about
it. We must prepare students to handle stress in a better way.
Corruption
 Today’s youth is concerned with the issue of corruption more than anything else
and that is why most of the protestors in the recent Anna Hazare’s campaign against
corruption were the Indian youth.
 Though fighting against corruption is the responsibility of every citizen but youth
by virtue of their nature and energy participate more in this cause.
 Corruption should be rooted out of country. Youth in India must know what they
want and how they want because good and bad co-exist in the society.
 Today we relate everything related to success in terms of money. But success is
more than this. Youth must derive inspiration from their role model and live life
with proud.
Reservation
 The Indian Constitution has a law for the same and according to this; reservation has
been made to bring underprivileged classes at par with privileged or general ones.
 There are numerous reservations like reservation for women, reservation for
physically challenged, reservation for economically backward class, reservation for
Scheduled Castes etc.
 Though, reservation system is an evident discrimination, but it had been started with
a very good objective of uplifting the socially backward society to give them
equality of opportunities.
 People have started misusing it. There are many examples of people making false
documents just to get a seat in a college or a job. This leaves the more eligible
candidate to give their seat to a person belonging to a reserve category.
Terrorism
Terrorism involves extraordinary violence. It is intended to create massive fear and
involves a planned attack for a purpose, often against something or someone.
CAUSES OF TERRORISM
 PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES.
 UNEMPLOYMENT AND FINANCIAL.
 DEMAND FOR SOMETHING.
 USE OF RELIGION.
 EDUCATION.
EFFECTS OF TERRORISM
 All terrorist acts involve violence or the threat of violence.
 Terrorist groups are generally small and have few members, limited firepower,
and other resources.
 For this reason they rely on intense bloody and destructive acts of hit-and-run
violence to attract attention to their group and their cause.
 Through the media they are able to create a larger voice for themselves and
create hostilities among people.
Prevention of Terrorism
Primary prevention:
 Education!!!
 Understand the differences in cultures, religions, beliefs and human behaviors
Think of the peace, freedom and equality of all human beings, not just “my group of
people”
Eliminate the root of terrorism
Secondary prevention:
 Establish surveillance and monitoring system on terrorism attack
 Improve protective system for citizens
Tertiary prevention
 Early detection of the sources
 Prevent the extension of impairments
 Rescue the survivors
 Console the rest of the population
Conclusion
Youth are back bone to the nation. They can change the future of the society with their well being
and courageous behavior. Approximately 600 million population in India is younger than 25 years
of age and close to 70% of the total population is less than 40 years of age. Near about 40% of the
Indian population is aged between 13 to 35 years that is defined as youth according to the National
Youth Policy. Such a huge population of young is not only exceptional in India but also in the
World. In case, this demographic dividend is not used properly then it may result in demographic
disaster in India. if you check the history of India then also it is clear that youth can bring a huge
change. Almost all our freedom fighters were young when they started their struggle for freedom
that resulted in the freedom of our country. But this enthusiasm among today’s youth is eloping
somewhere leading to frustration and lack of zeal. The reason may be unnecessary burden in the
form of competition, unemployment, lack of job skills and skill based job etc. Indian Youth at
present is also facing acute pressure in every field from getting job to performance at the job.In the
coming decade, it is expected that the Indian labour force will grow by more than 8 million per
annum. More and more youth will enter into the labor market. So the real challenge in front of the
policy makers is to create enough jobs in the market for this educated workforce so as to direct the
youth and nation.

  • 17. Materialism  Being materialistic is perceived to be a personal issue, however, it is the society that promotes this materialistic nature.  if the world stopped giving more respect to people who have a bigger car, a better phone and more materialistic things, would you ever want to spend your money on things such as these? Probably not; one of the biggest reasons youngsters succumb to materialism is due to the expectations of the society.  A man with a BMW will generally be given more respect by others when compared to a man having a Maruti 800
  • 18. Parental Pressure  Parents of most youngsters want them to pursue academic careers, if someone wishes to do something different (Such as Music and Fine Arts) the idea is ridiculed and in worst cases, suppressed.  Moreover, there is always a comparison made between the children, every parent wants his/her child to be the best.  This practice of comparison not only demoralizes the child but can also provoke the youngster to go to any extreme level to prove that he/ she is better than the others.
  • 19. Time Management  Coping with the various expectations of the society, such as scoring well in college examinations, holding a job, having a good social life and so on makes life tough for youngsters as they face the problem of time management.  There are only 24 hours in a day, and it is sad that a young person is expected to do so much in a limited time.

Each of these activities carries some degree of risk.  Risk taking is considered to be a characteristic of youth, and experimentation and exploration are valuable parts of growing up. However, youth commonly underestimate their risk of disease, accident, or vulnerability, and they often lack knowledge about the consequences of their actions thereby exposing themselves to serious health problems.  Shortsightedness regarding the health effects of their behavior lies behind tobacco and alcohol use by youth; increased incidence of overweight and obese youth; and high rates of injury, especially from traffic accidents.
  • 25. Suicide in youths Suicide is now the second or third leading cause of death for youths. social interactions are important the presence of social interactions means that small differences in aggregate fundamentals can trigger large shifts in the number of youth suicides. Divorce rates at the county, state, and national levels are highly correlated with youth-suicide rates. Causes for suicide:  Depression: the most common of the causes of teen suicide.  Peer pressure.  Financial problems.  Substance abuse .  Failure or loss such as breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, failing a big exam, or witnessing family turmoil.  Etc.

Every person has own optimal level of worry and anxiety, which helps him/ her to achieve the best results. We must learn how to control stress and extra anxiety for preparing for the test. If exams cause great worry, and there are some symptoms of exam stress (insomnia, rapid pulse, hands trembling and so on) we ought to do something about it. We must prepare students to handle stress in a better way.
  • 28. Corruption  Today’s youth is concerned with the issue of corruption more than anything else and that is why most of the protestors in the recent Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption were the Indian youth.  Though fighting against corruption is the responsibility of every citizen but youth by virtue of their nature and energy participate more in this cause.  Corruption should be rooted out of country. Youth in India must know what they want and how they want because good and bad co-exist in the society.  Today we relate everything related to success in terms of money. But success is more than this. Youth must derive inspiration from their role model and live life with proud.
  • 29. Reservation  The Indian Constitution has a law for the same and according to this; reservation has been made to bring underprivileged classes at par with privileged or general ones.  There are numerous reservations like reservation for women, reservation for physically challenged, reservation for economically backward class, reservation for Scheduled Castes etc.  Though, reservation system is an evident discrimination, but it had been started with a very good objective of uplifting the socially backward society to give them equality of opportunities.  People have started misusing it. There are many examples of people making false documents just to get a seat in a college or a job. This leaves the more eligible candidate to give their seat to a person belonging to a reserve category.
  • 30. Terrorism Terrorism involves extraordinary violence. It is intended to create massive fear and involves a planned attack for a purpose, often against something or someone. • 34. Conclusion Youth are back bone to the nation. They can change the future of the society with their well being and courageous behavior. Approximately 600 million population in India is younger than 25 years of age and close to 70% of the total population is less than 40 years of age. Near about 40% of the Indian population is aged between 13 to 35 years that is defined as youth according to the National Youth Policy. Such a huge population of young is not only exceptional in India but also in the World. In case, this demographic dividend is not used properly then it may result in demographic disaster in India. if you check the history of India then also it is clear that youth can bring a huge change. Almost all our freedom fighters were young when they started their struggle for freedom that resulted in the freedom of our country. But this enthusiasm among today’s youth is eloping somewhere leading to frustration and lack of zeal. The reason may be unnecessary burden in the form of competition, unemployment, lack of job skills and skill based job etc. Indian Youth at present is also facing acute pressure in every field from getting job to performance at the job.In the coming decade, it is expected that the Indian labour force will grow by more than 8 million per annum. More and more youth will enter into the labor market. So the real challenge in front of the policy makers is to create enough jobs in the market for this educated workforce so as to direct the youth and nation.
