AVATAR  What is the purpose of a magazine review? The purpose of a magazine review is to inform the audience about the film as well as advertise the film in order to persuade people to watch it. The review features other peoples opinions, so that the audience can examine a wide variety of critics opinions, so they can decide if they want to watch it.  What types of magazine reviews exist? There are many different types of magazine reviews,  some are written  and include the views of the general public others however are just written  in first person, and only include one point of view.  A quantity of  film reviews are also written critically whereas others are written  for the purpose off advertising there product.  How are they laid out?  The magazine review is layed out with a very large main image it towards the right.  Underneath this image  and to the side there are separate smaller images highlighting important scenes within the film. On the left hand side there is also a small text box layed out in columns this shows that the review is fairly formal, and has the typical conventions of a newspaper.  What is the ratio of text to visual imagery? The poster is layed out with pictures taking up significantly most of the space. There is only one small, main piece of text to the space of 5 same sized pictures. All of these images emphasise the modern CGI effects and techniques as well as highlighting and illustrating key events that happen within the movie, so we can get a feel for the storyline.  What writing styles are used? The writing style is very persuasive. It explains the making of the film and how effective the film is. It’s also in an interview format, with quotes being added in from the actors and directors point of view.  Who are the target audience for that magazine? EMPIRE Magazine – which is aimed at film fans and people who enjoy watching films we know this as it’s a magazine which specifically contains, reviews, films, interviews the stars, directors and producers. So the reviews have to be in detail and fairly accurate from the perspective of the majority of society. As the target audience are those who have a lot of knowledge about films.
How are the audience being targeted through the mode of address? (the way in which they are being spoken to) The audience are being spoken to in first person, as though they are part of the film. This makes the audience feel more involved and makes them want to watch the film, as they feel like they are part of the set. How does the magazine genre reflect the film they are reviewing  The magazine is empire and therefore includes many different film reviews from different genres. The target audience of empire magazine is very broad. This compares with the mass audience that would enjoy avatar. It is a very different, interesting film with CGI effects, which would appeal to families and any target audience of both genres.

It consists of gossip pages, horoscopes, real life stories and TV and music reviews and guides, directed towards a female audience as female stereotypically enjoy to read and talk about gossip. How are the audience being targeted through the mode of address? (the way in which they are being spoken to) The audience are being spoken to as though they are there at the time (1968)  as though as they are part of the events happening, this invites the audience and makes them feel as though they are part off it. This makes the audience empathise with the situation the characters are facing, and creates a stronger bond between the audience and characters.  How does the magazine genre reflect the film they are reviewing (consider the relationship between the films target  Star magazine is targeted at teenage girls and women who crave  to know and talk about gossip. It is a very stereotypical female magazine as it also feature style, fashion and makeup tips as well as true life stories about real life women. This reflects the film as Made in Dangenham is a drama where female workers walk out in a protest against sexual discrimination  in 1968  at the Ford Dagenham car plant. This emphasised the fact that the film is strongly relating to women and women’s needs, like the magazine does.

Its a very journalistic writing style, which is full off puns, alliteration and other poetic techniques. The lexis is very specific and it could almost be jargon as it is in the semantic field of science fiction eg. Interface.

The film would be more for the middle age and targeted predominantly at males, due to the action genre which is stereotypically male. Also the actor featuring is Tom Cruise which appeals to the men and also the women due to his sex appeal.

They are playing with the audiences imagination, in order to draw the audience in, to feel like they are part of the film for example, “Think of a world”. It’s written in a descriptive journalistic style, which adds to the sense of realism and feeling of bring present.

The magazine article is taken from Sky TV magazine, therefore this will appeal  to all sky viewers.  Sky appeals to all audiences, especially young and middle aged who are more prone to getting new technologies.
