Mobile health (mHealth) is being touted as the next solution to problems facing the health care system—from disease management to convincing consumers to put down their cigarettes (and donuts). mHealth presents exciting opportunities for developers to help transform an industry armed with clipboards and paper files to one equipped with smartphones and tablets by introducing concepts such as incentives and gamification. But, as many of us who own them know, just because you have a fitness app on your phone, it doesn’t make you an athlete. Developers at the forefront innovation need to understand the challenges the health care industry faces. Challenges like data reliability, privacy concerns, the ability to integrate with electronic medical records, and proper alignment of incentives and care. In this presentation, Harry Greenspun, MD, explores the hurdles mHealth needs to overcome to allow this transformational trend reach its full potential.
