2. ROLES OF ROOF
ROOF IS PART OF A BUILDING
ENVELOPE.
It is the covering on the uppermost
part of the building or shelter which
provide protection from animals and
weather, notably rain or snow, but also
heat, wind and sunlight. The elements
in a design of a roof are:
1. The materials
2. The construction
3. The durability
The shape of roofs differs greatly from
region to region. Climates and
materials are the main influences the
shape, structure and outer covering.
5. TYPES OF ROOF
Traditional roofing can be divided into Pitched-Roof and Flat
Roof. There are three main types of pitched roofs namely
Single Roofs
Double Roofs
Trussed Roofs
Trussed rafter roof –
modern construction
“A double roof is a roof whose rafters are of
such a length that they require an
intermediate support. This support is usually
a beam which is secured under the rafters at
a point half way between the ridge and the
wallplate. This beam is known as a purlin.”
“A timber framing system in which the
common rafters rest on purlins which provide
intermediate support.”
6. DOUBLE PITCHED ROOF
In modern terminology, double-pitched
roofs are also known as double roofs
and are constructed of lightweight roof
trussers called trussed rafters. The
terminology for the roof in general is
double pitch roof truss or double-sloped
roof.
In fact, double-pitched roofs nowadays
can be implemented within a whole
variety of designs and combinations of
double roofs. Mostly depending on the
size and shape of the ground floor plan,
double-pitched roofs apply to the plan of
the building accordingly.
Below, we present a drawing in which
you can see a house in building with a
partly hipped roof with one gable and
one hipped end. Just so you know, a
fully hipped roof has no gables and its
eaves run round the perimeter of the
roof of the house. Also, they are of the
boxed or enclosed type
The use of double roof structure is
to reduce heat gain In climate
responsive design.
7. Super insulated double pole roofs can be built very inexpensively using small diameter wood
poles that can often be acquired for the cost of a firewood permit
8. The double-pitched roof is a traditional
and most often used type of roofing.
Although it can be at best described as a
triangle that consists basically of two
surfaces being connected with a ridge in
the top, they are additionally supported by
a ridge connecting the load-bearing walls
through the top.
The triangles in the end are called gables,
and their main advantage is the
installation of windows so that natural light
comes inside of them.
The best part about double-pitched roofs
is the fact that there can be various types
of roof covering installed to it, even
coming from the lowest outcrop. Although
they are being classified as both
symmetrical and asymmetrical solutions,
double-pitched roofs are mostly
symmetrical with equal surfaces and are
considered as a perfect triangle.
The asymmetrical ones, on the other side,
usually have their roof ridges placed aside
from the center as their roof surfaces
differ in their length and covering area.
In a nutshell, when aesthetics comes into
play, the designs are certainly interesting
but may negatively affect the usage of the
building area below the roof itself
9. o Double-pitched roof can be
classified as symmetrical
and asymmetrical.
o The first option is the most
popular.
o It has equal surfaces and can
be considered as a perfect
triangle. Asymmetrical roof
has the roof ridge placed not
in the center and the roof
surfaces are different by
length and area.
o From the aesthetic point of
view – it is very interesting
design but it negatively
affects the usage of building
area below the roof.
10. DOUBLE ROOF PAVILLION ALSO
KNOWN AS GAZEBO
Gazebo is a structure that often built in a park, garden or
spacious public area. They provide shade, shelter, ornamental
features, landscape, and a place to rest.
