MEMORANDUM
TO: Department and Agency Heads
SUBJECT: Open Data Initiative
The Mayors goal since taking office has been to run a more open and
transparent government garnering as much citizen involvement as possible in the
hopes of creating a leaner, cleaner, and smarter city that is poised for the future.
We’ve done this a number of ways via our transparency web site: can-do.honolulu.gov
and many mobile applications including Honolulu 311. We have been recognized
nationally for our efforts.
By freely sharing data amongst the citizens of the City & County of Honolulu, we
hope to develop opportunities for economic development, civic engagement, and create
a more informed citizen.
We have the ability to do this by releasing in a centralized location many of the
data sets that we have available. We encourage local developers and entrepreneurs to
use that data to create web and mobile applications such as “DaBus” and to interact
with the public in a quicker and more transparent manner.
I, hereby, direct staff to work with the Department of Information Technology on
publishing and maintaining qualified public data sets in a common-open format, which
is freely available in an industry-standard model. We have attached a spreadsheet of
the types of data sets we are looking to make available for public consumption.
Very truly yours,
c2L4
Peter B. Carlisle
Mayor
