2. Why Low Carb Diets Are Popular
Low carb diets are popular for
one simple reason, they work.
3. What if you love
your breads,
pastas, and
potatoes?
Not only that…
4. … our bodies actually need carbs
for energy and for optimal
health.
◦ While cutting down on refined grains and
sugars is still recommended, cutting carbs
drastically may not healthy.
◦ Plus, whole grains provide fiber as well as some
important micronutrients.
7. Carb Management: The Better
Option
Carb management (or control) is not
about carb cutting.
It is about how your body utilizes
carbohydrates.
It is one reason some people can eat all
the carbs and never put on weight.
8. Side note: Refined
carbs and sugars
should be avoided as
much as possible no
matter the diet one is
on.
9. Can Carb Control Pills Help?
Carb control supplements are
supposed to help you lose weight by
doing one of two things (basically):
1. Block carbohydrates
2. Improve insulin sensitivity (or
lower insulin resistance).
We shall look at some of these in
the next few slides.
10. Carb Blockers
Most carb blockers, or starch blockers,
consist of white kidney bean extract
(Phaseolus vulgaris).
White kidney beans are said to inhibit
amylase, an enzyme that breaks down
carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates may then pass through the
system undigested.
11. In one 30 day study published in the
International Journal of Medical
Sciences, subjects receiving white bean
extract showed significantly greater
reduction in body weight, fat mass,
waist/hip/thigh circumferences, and
body mass index (BMI) compared to
the placebo.

12. Insulin Sensitivity
Insulin sensitivity may be defined as how
successfully the body is able clear blood
glucose.
The less insulin you need for this the
better, as insulin makes it harder for the
body to lose fat.
It is likely the reason you can’t seem to
get super-lean even after spending hours
in the gym and eating right.
13. Insulin Resistance Health Risks
Insulin resistance health risks include:
Type 2 diabetes
High blood pressure
Heart disease.
15. Improving Insulin sensitivity
Certain natural compounds
and lifestyle changes may
help improve insulin
sensitivity, thus lowering
insulin resistance.
16. High impact Exercise
Exercise, especially high impact resistance
training (HIRT) and high impact interval
training (HIIT) may help increase insulin
sensitivity.
The downside is that not everybody wants
to put themselves through such training.
17. Cinnamon
Cinnamon is an insulin mimicker. It can
imitate the biological function of insulin
but without the harmful spike that can
lead to fat storage.
Cinnamon may also be beneficial for
regulating blood sugar.
18. Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is another insulin
mimicker: it mimics the action of insulin
but without the fat storage effects.
It is also an antioxidant and may protect
your body from free radicals.
Various studies have shown that it may
lower insulin resistance and thus help to
burn fat.
19. The downside to using cinnamon
for improving insulin sensitivity is
that you would need to use lots of
it. Also, many cinnamon products
you get at the grocery stores
contain only a smattering of real
cinnamon, which is typically
degraded anyway.
20. Carb-fighting pill allows you to eat
carbs plus…
Potentially lower
blood sugar
Decrease fat
storage
Increase fat burning
