1. What is an Audiologist?
Audiologists are healthcare
professionals who assess, diagnose,
manage and treat hearing and balance
related disorders. They specialize in the
areas of prevention, assessment,
identification, and rehabilitation of
hearing loss and balance disorders
across all age groups, from birth to elderly. Community education regarding
hearing health, evaluation, and rehabilitation may also be provided.
Educational requirements include completion of a Doctorate in Audiology
(Au.D.), Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Sciences and Disorders
(Ph.D.), or a Masters degree. The Au.D. is slowly becoming the standard for
the field. As such, the education and experience prior to practicing is more
in-depth and often of greater variety. Therefore, you can have confidence in
their ability to treat your hearing and balance needs.
Where do they work?
Audiologists have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, and
therefore, can be found in many venues. These include, but are not limited
to:
 Otolaryngology (ENT) clinics
 Other physician offices
 Public/Private school systems
 University and college clinics

Why and when should I make an appointment?
If you or a member of your family suspect any issues with your hearing,
such as decreased hearing, fluctuating hearing sensitivity, ringing in the ears
(tinnitus), or sudden hearing loss, you should make an appointment as soon
as possible. Also, if you are experiencing any difficulties with dizziness or
balance issues, such as lightheadedness, vertigo (room spinning), feeling
off-balanced or dizzy, make time for a visit very soon. The sooner your
hearing or balance problems are diagnosed, the sooner you can resolve
them!
What testing will be performed?
After taking a thorough case history of your health, hearing health, and
balance history, your audiologist will determine what testing needs to be
completed to make your diagnosis. Below are some of the evaluations that
may be completed during your visit.
Hearing Testing
 Otoscopy – Ear canal and ear drum inspection
 Tympanometry – Pressure testing of your middle ear
 Otoacoustic Emissions – Objective testing of your organ of
hearing (cochlea)

3.  Pure-tone audiometry – Interactive behavioral evaluation of how
you hear
 Evoked Potentials testing – Objective evaluation of your hearing
system
Balance Testing
 Vestibular evaluations evaluate your balance system in various
ways. Some tests will require very little from you, and you will
just sit back and relax. In others you will be more interactive,
moving to various positions (e.g., sitting, lying, or standing in
different positions). These evaluations may include the
following:
o Electronystagmography (ENG) testing
o Rotational chair testing
o Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential testing
o Electrocochleography (ECochG) testing
o Fistula Testing
o Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) Testing
