Challenging conventions of Hip-Hop media
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. Poster
In order to make my media product marketable, I was
obliged to fit some of the mass conventions of the
typical Hip-Hop posters. IE the concept of my image
portrays Young Deacon to be a leader. This sort of
concept is portrayed in rapper Lowkeys album cover
Here he is imaged writing whilst wearing a scarf
typically associated with Palestine, portraying him to
be a freedom writer. Deacon on the other hand is
imaged giving a passionate speech/performance.
One of the most obvious ways
to market the product is to
advertise where it is available
for purchase, hence i have
included the three most
common institutions in which
audiences purchase music
from:
iTunes
Amazon
Bandcamp
3. Music video
As Young Deacon represents a much deeper message than
most commercial Hip-Hop artists, I chose to challenge to
typical conventions of diamonds, drugs, money and voyeurism
etc.
These shots of 50 Cents “Candy Shop”
are typical of a conventional Hip-Hop
music video. The jewellery, and the
voyeurism are symbolic of what 50
Cent represents, where as in this
particular image from my music video,
the suit is symbolic of what Young
Deacon represents.
4. DigiPak
Over the last two years, the UK urban music
scene has seen a rise in the attractiveness of
the black and white motif. This is mainly
because the flag bearers of the music scene
are focused more on creating good music,
rather than selling an image. Those listed
below are acclaimed to be the best at their
field of music, and his is similar to Young
Deacon, as he has been acclaimed to be the
most accurate voice of the next generation.
He also is focused more on making good
music than selling an image, hence the black
and white motif.
