1. Media Genre Essay
Steve Neale said genre can be defined by instances of repetition and differences. My
products for example my CD back and front cover are prime examples of repetition and
differences. In my products I kept it consistent by using the same three colours throughout
my products including my poster. The colours I used were grey, black and dark purple, these
colours are not popular but when put together the colours make my products more unique.
The colours have connotations that represent contemporary subculture of clubbing and
dance as they are cool, dark colours which represent the night and after-hours activity. I also
repeated the triangle symbol in my products which is also an example of repetition. The
triangle symbol is also a feature of iconography; the triangle is a symbolic image. I used the
triangle because it’s used regularly in today’s adverts the triangle is also a religious image
which represents the ‘eye of province’ on a dollar bill, so there are connotations of wealth.
The main reason I used repetition was to give my products are more consistent and
professional look. I have applied Neale’s mental machinery by using images and text like the
Triangle. As I mentioned the triangle associates with the ‘Secret Service’ making my CD
covers/Poster mysterious. The audience will recognize the iconic image and this could boost
sale prices and it could increase the popularity for my artist. The audience see this as a
different and exciting element of the product. By using the repetition in my products I have
also applied Chandler’s theory by creating a structure and a theme which is portrayed in all
of my products.
