‘The Princess on the Road’
Theme : Gender Inequality-harassment of women
CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES
The pupils:
1. develop proper outlook on gender issues
2. learn to glorify the efforts of women race to break the barriers around them.
3. learn to read and enjoy pieces of literature like one act play, poems and memoir.
4. think and evaluate critically the issues related to gender.
CONTENT ANALYSIS
“The Princess on the Road” is a one act play about a princess who leaves the comforts of royal
life and takes to the road dressed as a peasant girl, in search of adventure. The princess treads
dangerous grounds and finally lands in trouble. The play reminds us that women, irrespective of her
social status, is always marginalized. Though the princess suffers, she possesses the potential to break
the clutches to free herself.
PRE-REQUISITES :
The pupils have:
1. read stories about royal families.
2. an idea of the power and position of a prince and princess.
3. seen poor peasant girls, beggars and emaciated children in ragged clothes.
4. have read similar stories in Malayalam.
5. have seen films related to the theme of the play.
TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES:
1. power point presentation.
2. charts and flash cards.
3. pictures.
4. glossary or dictionary
CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE
INFORMAL TALK
Teacher initiates an informal and pleasant interaction with the students. (The
questions are presented in a PPT slide.)Then teacher shows some pictures in PPT.
 Are you interested in reading short stories?
 Have you ever read or watched plays?
ENTRY ACTIVITY
The teacher asks some questions again which are shown in the slide.
 Have you read plays or stories related to royal family?
 Do you like to hear such stories?

LINK TALK
Teacher leads the pupil to the lesson “The Princess on the Road” written by
Kathleen Conyngham Greene. Teacher shows the picture of the author and gives a
description of the writer which is presented in a slide.
Here is a play which describes the life of a princess who sets out on an adventure
trip to a village dressed as a peasant girl.
MICRO PROCESSING OF INPUT
 MODEL READING
Teacher reads the play aloud with pause and proper intonation.
 INDIVIDUAL READING
Teacher asks the pupils to read the play silently and to keep track of their
reading by marking ‘’ for what they have understood, ‘?’ for what they have not
understood and ‘!’ for what they have found interesting.
 COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
Students are asked to share their understandings and feelings about the play
in their groups.
GLOSSARY REFERENCE
Teacher asks pupils to refer to glossary and a dictionary to find the meaning
of the difficult words. The teacher shows the words and their meanings in a PPT
slide. The words like ‘SENTRY’, ‘BANQUET’, ‘COTTAGE’, etc… are presented.
FACILITATION BY THE TEACHER
The Princess go to the rural place in disguise of a peasant girl just for her
own adventure but unexpected turn of events occur during the course of her
journey which leads her to performing acts to prove her identity.

READING THE PLAY ALOUD BY THE PUPIL
A few students are called by their names and are asked to read the text
aloud.
SCAFFOLDING QUESTIONS
Teacher asks some questions and asks pupils to answer the questions:
1. How was the princess dressed to visit the village?
2. Why did the princess disguise as a peasant girl?
3. What is her husband’s name?
LANGUAGE ACTIVITY
Teacher shows the picture of a peasant girl and asks to write a small
description about this.
PRESENTATION BY THE PUPIL
Some of the pupils are asked to present their observations about the picture.
REVIEW QUESTIONS
Teacher asks a few review questions:
1. Does appearance play an important role in judging people?
2. What are your views about that?
3. Are the abilities to sing and dance, the signs of being born in high families?
FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES
 Imagine you are a newspaper reporter. Write a report of the experiences of the
princess in the village.
 Write a conversation between Florimund, the Prince and the King after the
departure of the princess from the palace.
 Write differences between princess and peasant girl.
Pupils read the play

INNOVATIVE LESSON PLAN Name of Teacher : Hermine Henry Standard : IX Name of the School : St. Goretti HSS, Punalur Strength : 35 Subject : English Period : II Unit : Unit II Breaking Barriers Duration : 45min Subunit : One Act Play Date : 17/08/2015 ‘The Princess on the Road’ Theme : Gender Inequality-harassment of women CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES The pupils: 1. develop proper outlook on gender issues 2. learn to glorify the efforts of women race to break the barriers around them. 3. learn to read and enjoy pieces of literature like one act play, poems and memoir. 4. think and evaluate critically the issues related to gender. CONTENT ANALYSIS “The Princess on the Road” is a one act play about a princess who leaves the comforts of royal life and takes to the road dressed as a peasant girl, in search of adventure. The princess treads dangerous grounds and finally lands in trouble. The play reminds us that women, irrespective of her social status, is always marginalized. Though the princess suffers, she possesses the potential to break the clutches to free herself. PRE-REQUISITES : The pupils have: 1. read stories about royal families. 2. an idea of the power and position of a prince and princess. 3. seen poor peasant girls, beggars and emaciated children in ragged clothes. 4. have read similar stories in Malayalam. 5. have seen films related to the theme of the play. TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES: 1. power point presentation. 2. charts and flash cards. 3. pictures. 4. glossary or dictionary
  • 2. CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE INFORMAL TALK Teacher initiates an informal and pleasant interaction with the students. (The questions are presented in a PPT slide.)Then teacher shows some pictures in PPT.  Are you interested in reading short stories?  Have you ever read or watched plays? ENTRY ACTIVITY The teacher asks some questions again which are shown in the slide.  Have you read plays or stories related to royal family?  Do you like to hear such stories? PUPIL RESPONSE Pupils observe carefully with great enthusiasm.   • 3. LINK TALK Teacher leads the pupil to the lesson “The Princess on the Road” written by Kathleen Conyngham Greene. Teacher shows the picture of the author and gives a description of the writer which is presented in a slide. Here is a play which describes the life of a princess who sets out on an adventure trip to a village dressed as a peasant girl. MICRO PROCESSING OF INPUT  MODEL READING Teacher reads the play aloud with pause and proper intonation.  INDIVIDUAL READING Teacher asks the pupils to read the play silently and to keep track of their reading by marking ‘’ for what they have understood, ‘?’ for what they have not understood and ‘!’ for what they have found interesting.  COLLABORATIVE LEARNING Students are asked to share their understandings and feelings about the play in their groups. GLOSSARY REFERENCE Teacher asks pupils to refer to glossary and a dictionary to find the meaning of the difficult words. The teacher shows the words and their meanings in a PPT slide. The words like ‘SENTRY’, ‘BANQUET’, ‘COTTAGE’, etc… are presented. FACILITATION BY THE TEACHER The Princess go to the rural place in disguise of a peasant girl just for her own adventure but unexpected turn of events occur during the course of her journey which leads her to performing acts to prove her identity. Pupils listen attentively and comprehend the theme. Pupils listen to the teacher with enthusiasm and interest. Students read the play silently and put the appropriate marks. Pupils were very active in their groups and freely exchange their views. Pupils write down the meaning of the words. Pupils seem to comprehend the meaning
  • 4. READING THE PLAY ALOUD BY THE PUPIL A few students are called by their names and are asked to read the text aloud. SCAFFOLDING QUESTIONS Teacher asks some questions and asks pupils to answer the questions: 1. How was the princess dressed to visit the village? 2. Why did the princess disguise as a peasant girl? 3. What is her husband’s name? LANGUAGE ACTIVITY Teacher shows the picture of a peasant girl and asks to write a small description about this. PRESENTATION BY THE PUPIL Some of the pupils are asked to present their observations about the picture. REVIEW QUESTIONS Teacher asks a few review questions: 1. Does appearance play an important role in judging people? 2. What are your views about that? 3. Are the abilities to sing and dance, the signs of being born in high families? FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES  Imagine you are a newspaper reporter. Write a report of the experiences of the princess in the village.  Write a conversation between Florimund, the Prince and the King after the departure of the princess from the palace.  Write differences between princess and peasant girl. Pupils read the play correctly. Pupils answer as: 1. The princess dressed up like a peasant girl. 2.To set out on an adventure. 3.Florimund Most of the students give clear cut description about the peasant girl. Pupils answer as : 1. Yes. 2. Appearance always matters in judging the personality of people. 3. No, those abilities are inborn. It can also be achieved through hard work.
