Internet was first used by US Military in the 1960’s
Officially released in 1983
World Wide Web developed in 1990’s
Now 3.7 billion internet users

4. Internet Speeds
Dial Up Internet – speeds of up to 56kbps.
A song would take anything from 30 minutes to
a few hours to download. One low-quality movie
Could take 3 to 5 days to download.
Inconvenient as used phone line, so could not make
phone calls at the same time
Broadband – launched in the UK in 2000 – phoneline
Split between internet and telephone – increased
Internet speeds
Now have fibre broadband speed up to to 300mbps

Information

Consumers see online reviews almost everytime they do an internet search. They have empowered the customer.

themselves

The total number of people who use YouTube – 1,300,000,000
300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute!
Almost 5 billion videos are watched on Youtube every single
day.
YouTube gets over 30 million visitors per day
Netflix – has 104 million subscribers worldwide

10. Consumer Trends
At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster was trading in over
12 countries. It had over 9,000 stores and revenue of
$5.9 billion.
Fast forward to 2013 – no stores remaining. This
demonstrates how rapidly the change in technology
and the increase in the use of the Internet to stream
video’s has impacted the high street.

11. Summary
Invention and development of the internet has changed forever how we
communicate and shop.
Advancements in internet speeds have improved the user experience.
Global access to the internet is ever increasing, with the way people
access it shifting from desktop to mobile technology.
Search engines are becoming increasingly more powerful and are an everyday part
of life.
Online video consumption has overtaken physical media.
Everyone is now a critic – consumer reviews have the power.
The Internet can make or break businesses e.g. Blockbuster
