Interpreting photographs

      Learning objective: to
    understand and interpret
 different types of photographs
Types of photographs
• Aerial photograph – taken directly
  from above (vertical)
• Oblique photograph – taken from an
  angle from above
Aerial photographs
show a ‘bird’s eye Oblique
view’ while oblique aerial
photographs show a
3d view.
Types of photographs
• Satellite photograph– taken from space.
• Can show a large area (e.g. the whole
  Earth)
• They can also zoom in to street level.

Interpreting physical features
          from photographs
Relief (the shape of the land):
• Is the land sloping or flat?
• If slopes, are they steep or gentle?
• Are there hills / mountains / valleys? What size / shape are they?

River / coastal features:
• Is there a river?
• Is it long / wide / short / narrow?
• Is there a lake?
• Are there rivers flowing into the lake?
• What is the coastline like?
• Is it straight or are there bays and headlands?
• Are there beaches? How long / wide are they?
• Are there islands in the rivers / sea? Describe their size and shape
Interpreting human features
          from photographs
Farmland
• Are the fields large / small?
• Regular or irregular pattern?
• What colour is the land? What does this suggest about what is being
   grown?
• How are the fields separated – hedges, roads, rivers?

Settlement
• Small settlement – what is the shape? (Nucleated, linear, dispersed)
• Housing developments – what pattern is the housing (grid, cul-de-sac
etc)? How large / small are the houses? Do they have gardens /
   garages?
• Can you identify shops, schools, places of worship, tourist facilities?

Transport & communications
• What roads are there (motorways, A roads, small rural roads)?
• What transport links can be identified? (airports, railways, ports)
Task
• Look at the oblique aerial photograph
on p11 of your Skills Book.

• Describe the physical and human
  features which can be seen.
What is the pattern of land use
    in this photograph?
What are the human features
  R,S,T in this photograph?
