1. Children and Exercise Community Project By Heather Frazier
2. Everyone can improve from exercise. No matter what age, sex, and or ability level. This presentation will focus primarily on adolescents any ability level.
3. 3 points will be examined Why is exercise needed? Why our kids aren't getting as much exercise as they need. How to increase their amount of exercise and have fun doing it.
4. Did you know? According to The Impact of Nutrition and Exercise on Student’s Lives by Betty Kern,33% of adolescents are overweight.
5. Or That? Overweight teens are 80% more likely to become overweight adults. It is feared that an increase in heart disease, strokes, cancer and other health problems will be seen as early as in their twenties for these individuals.
18. What can exercise do? Aerobic exercise helps all of the body systems learn to adapt…it helps regulate systems that are out of balance and enhances those systems that are not An Ohio State University study found that exercising to music may stimulate and increase cognitive arousal while helping to organize cognitive output
19. The amount of exercise recommended by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education At least60 minutes to several hours a day of physical activity This does not have to be all at once Try not to do greater than 2 hours of vigorous exercise during the day. Physical activity needs to be moderate to vigorous Moderate activities Brisk walking Bicycling Playing actively Dancing Yoga Vigorous activities Jogging Jumping rope In-line skating Skate boarding Swimming
20. Factors that affect kids not exercising Electronics Teens average 23 hours of TV viewing per week Additional “screen time” includes texting, video/computer games, internet, email…etc… The only physical activity most teens get each day is in physical education class Lack of social groups (especially children with lower ability levels)
21. How can we increase the amount of exercise? Limit TV or game playing and save it until your child has played for a certain amount of time with a peer or doing some sort of gross motor activity. Better yet use TV and game playing as a reinforcer. Only given when certain behavior has occurred for example their room is clean.
22. Active Gaming Active gaming is the combination of video games and physical activity. Children can play with the video games, while being physically active. They also include active learning games that are technology driven activities that provide students with an academic game focus while being physically active. WiiSports Dance Dance Revolution Brain Bike
23. What can you do together? Join a sport or go to a camp. Both give your child an automatic social group and if you are the parent of a child with a disability you know the importance of this social group.
33. Try in-line skating (with proper equipment) Younger children Red Rover Freeze tag Relay races Hide and go seek Take a walk Dance Walk the Dog Ride a bike Play ball with your family Wash cars Do yard work
34. Our children need an hour of exercise per day. Getting this exercise can be difficult. There are ways to increase exercise while keeping it fun. Try these out and help your child improve physically, socially, and mentally!
