Hybrids: An integral part of PSA Peugeot Citroën’s technological strategy
- This world first positions PSA Peugeot Citroën as a diesel hybrid pioneer with an
ambitious development programme.
- Hybrid technologies should allow the Group to comply with regulations on CO2
emissions and maintain its environmental leadership.
- The recent signature of a joint venture agreement with BMW (BMW Peugeot
Citroën Electrification) will help the Group become a European leader in hybrid
vehicle components.
Leveraging the best expertise: An innovation and a world first
- HYbrid4 technology combines the best technologies developed by our engineers
for the diesel engine, electric motor, second-generation Stop & Start system and
the manual compact automated gearbox.
- A pioneer in green technologies, the HYbrid4 is designed to become a European
benchmark, just like the DPF and e-HDI engine.
- The next step will be the plug-in hybrid.
Helping to move the model ranges upmarket
The decision to equip series models like the Peugeot 3008 and 508 with HYbrid4
technology is helping to move the Group's model ranges upmarket by offering:
- High-level performance combined with outstanding road handling.
- Ease of use, with a choice of four driving modes: Auto, Zero Emission Vehicle
(ZEV), Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) and Sport.
- A quiet ride, with the ability to run in pure electric mode.
- The peace of mind that comes from the added safety of four-wheel drive.
- A tiny carbon footprint, with emissions as low as 99 g CO2/km.
- A significant decline in fuel consumption (35% less than a similar-size diesel
powertrain).
PSA Peugeot Citroën’s strategy in the area of low-carbon vehicles is to promote
sustainable mobility by offering “a clean car for everyone”.
Although cars continue to be the most practical mode of transportation for individual
mobility needs, governments worldwide are setting increasingly ambitious targets for
reducing CO2 emissions. As a result, electric and hybrid vehicles could make up 15% of
the market in 2020.
Backed by its experience in this area, PSA Peugeot Citroën is resolutely committed to
demonstrating its environmental leadership and staying a step ahead in low-carbon
mobility. The Group intends to continuously raise the bar on environmental performance
while giving customers the affordability and features they expect.
Objective for 2012:
Sell one million vehicles that emit less than 120g/km of CO2 in Europe each year.
Hybrid Technology: A New Component in PSA Peugeot Citroën’s
Low-Carbon Strategy
Reducing CO2 emissions is more important than ever…
Governments around the world are setting increasingly ambitious targets for reducing
CO2 emissions.
Major CO2 emission targets through 2020
…and PSA Peugeot Citroën is ahead of the curve
The vast majority of vehicles (85%) will still be powered by internal
combustion engines in 2020.
To reduce CO2 emissions, PSA Peugeot Citroën is continuing to improve
its petrol and diesel engines through:
Downsizing, with its virtuous impact on CO2.
Enhanced engine efficiency combined with different levels of hybrid
technology, including second-generation Stop & Start micro-hybrid,
HYbrid4 full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid solutions.
The HYbrid4 Diesel Hybrid
Diesel and Electric Energy Combined in an Innovative Architecture
for a Host of Advantages
PSA Peugeot Citroën has been developing hybrid technologies for many years.
A pioneer in hybrid technology, PSA Peugeot Citroën first introduced the Stop & Start
system on the Citroën C2 and C3 in 2004. Stop & Start, the first level in hybrid
technology, is especially effective in city driving, where vehicles spend about 30% of
their time at rest for an average of 15 seconds, resulting in unneeded waste. Stop &
Start shuts down the internal combustion engine when the vehicle is at a standstill and
automatically starts it back up again when the driver presses on the accelerator, thereby
reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Now, in a world first, PSA Peugeot Citroën is expanding its approach and introducing a
new, innovative hybrid technology:
The HYbrid4 diesel hybrid
Three key strategic decisions guided the technical choices involved in developing this
technology:
1. Leverage the best existing components and expertise in a consistent,
efficient approach.
Very quickly, the HDi DPF engine stood out as the most efficient and consistent
technical solution for the following reasons:
- The HDi DPF corresponds to the expectations of European customers, as a large
percentage of cars sold in Europe are diesels.
- PSA Peugeot Citroën has recognised expertise in diesel engines based on HDi
DPF technologies.
- HDi DPF diesel engines have a better thermodynamic performance than
petrol engines, using around 30% less fuel for a similar sized engine.
- The HDi DPF engine helps both preserve energy resources, with the best
possible mileage, and reduce the automobile’s contribution to the greenhouse
effect, with the lowest possible CO2 emissions.
On the electric side, PSA Peugeot Citroën has capitalised on its long-standing
expertise in electric vehicles. To this day, the electric Peugeot 106, sold between
1995 and 2003, remains the highest selling zero emission vehicle in the world. The Group
has followed up with two new-generation pure electrics: the Peugeot iOn and the Citroën
C-Zero, both launched in late 2010. With 30% of the market, PSA Peugeot Citroën is
Europe’s leading EV manufacturer.
The 6-speed manual compact automated gearbox used in the Peugeot and Citroën
ranges since 2008 was a natural choice to mate with the diesel powertrain thanks to its
automatic shift management system and role in optimising fuel consumption (an
automatic gearbox would have resulted in higher carbon emissions).
Similarly, the Stop & Start system (STT) on the diesel hybrid grew out of the Group’s
experience with the Citroën C2 and C3. The latest generation STT has been broadly
deployed across the Peugeot and Citroën line-ups since 2011.
2. Use a parallel design.
PSA Peugeot Citroën’s hybrids are powered by two systems that can propel the vehicle
separately or together:
- The internal combustion engine works best in highway driving, and can be used to
power any type of vehicle, while still delivering the safety and enjoyable driving
experience customers want.
- The electric motor is more efficient at start-up and low speeds (under 55 kmh),
conditions that correspond to city driving—the most appropriate use for electric vehicles.
- The two systems can also work together in certain circumstances, for example to
provide extra boost during sudden acceleration when passing another vehicle.
Hybrid vehicle performance is therefore directly comparable to that of a single
powertrain vehicle with a larger engine, while offering breakthrough gains in terms of
fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (around 35% less in combined-cycle driving, for
equivalent performance).
These two fundamental choices—leveraging the Group’s expertise in HDi
engines and electric motors and using a parallel design—paved the way for an
innovative architecture combining, for the first time, a front-mounted internal
combustion engine and an electric motor in the rear.
3. Place the electric motor in the rear.
Technically speaking, the front-mounted internal combustion engine powers the front
wheels, while the electric motor on the rear axle assembly powers the rear wheels.
This innovative architecture allows for four-wheel drive. What’s more, drive-by-wire
technology eliminates the need for a standard 4WD differential, which improves mileage
and makes for a roomier, more stylish passenger compartment.
This architecture also makes it easier to install the technology on different platforms, so
that the Group can ultimately offer hybrids across the model line-up.
HYbrid4 technology offers a major performance breakthrough in terms of fuel efficiency
and CO2 emissions, which stand at 99 g -109 g per km, depending on the model. This
represents a reduction of around 35% in combined-cycle driving.
The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, 508 RXH and 508 HYbrid4 and the Citroën DS5 HYbrid4 can
run in zero emission (ZEV) mode, which drastically reduces fuel consumption in city
driving. A vehicle in ZEV mode offers an amazingly noiseless, carbon-free ride.
HYbrid4 technology delivers high performance:
• Maximum combined power of 147 kW/200 hp from the 2.0 litre HDi DPF
engine (120 kW/163 hp) and the electric motor (27 kW/37 hp).
Maximum torque of 300 Nm (front) and 200 Nm (rear).
• Additional boost during sudden acceleration.
• Four-wheel drive, offering the same off-road capabilities as a standard SUV, for
added safety and peace of mind.
HYbrid4 World Premiere

  • 5. PSA Peugeot Citroën’s strategy in the area of low-carbon vehicles is to promote sustainable mobility by offering “a clean car for everyone”. Although cars continue to be the most practical mode of transportation for individual mobility needs, governments worldwide are setting increasingly ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions. As a result, electric and hybrid vehicles could make up 15% of the market in 2020. Backed by its experience in this area, PSA Peugeot Citroën is resolutely committed to demonstrating its environmental leadership and staying a step ahead in low-carbon mobility. The Group intends to continuously raise the bar on environmental performance while giving customers the affordability and features they expect. Objective for 2012: Sell one million vehicles that emit less than 120g/km of CO2 in Europe each year.
  • 6. Hybrid Technology: A New Component in PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Low-Carbon Strategy Reducing CO2 emissions is more important than ever… Governments around the world are setting increasingly ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions. Major CO2 emission targets through 2020 …and PSA Peugeot Citroën is ahead of the curve The vast majority of vehicles (85%) will still be powered by internal combustion engines in 2020. To reduce CO2 emissions, PSA Peugeot Citroën is continuing to improve its petrol and diesel engines through: Downsizing, with its virtuous impact on CO2. Enhanced engine efficiency combined with different levels of hybrid technology, including second-generation Stop & Start micro-hybrid, HYbrid4 full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid solutions.
  • 7. The HYbrid4 Diesel Hybrid Diesel and Electric Energy Combined in an Innovative Architecture for a Host of Advantages PSA Peugeot Citroën has been developing hybrid technologies for many years. A pioneer in hybrid technology, PSA Peugeot Citroën first introduced the Stop & Start system on the Citroën C2 and C3 in 2004. Stop & Start, the first level in hybrid technology, is especially effective in city driving, where vehicles spend about 30% of their time at rest for an average of 15 seconds, resulting in unneeded waste. Stop & Start shuts down the internal combustion engine when the vehicle is at a standstill and automatically starts it back up again when the driver presses on the accelerator, thereby reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Now, in a world first, PSA Peugeot Citroën is expanding its approach and introducing a new, innovative hybrid technology: The HYbrid4 diesel hybrid Three key strategic decisions guided the technical choices involved in developing this technology: 1. Leverage the best existing components and expertise in a consistent, efficient approach. Very quickly, the HDi DPF engine stood out as the most efficient and consistent technical solution for the following reasons: - The HDi DPF corresponds to the expectations of European customers, as a large percentage of cars sold in Europe are diesels. - PSA Peugeot Citroën has recognised expertise in diesel engines based on HDi DPF technologies. - HDi DPF diesel engines have a better thermodynamic performance than petrol engines, using around 30% less fuel for a similar sized engine. - The HDi DPF engine helps both preserve energy resources, with the best possible mileage, and reduce the automobile’s contribution to the greenhouse effect, with the lowest possible CO2 emissions. On the electric side, PSA Peugeot Citroën has capitalised on its long-standing expertise in electric vehicles. To this day, the electric Peugeot 106, sold between 1995 and 2003, remains the highest selling zero emission vehicle in the world. The Group has followed up with two new-generation pure electrics: the Peugeot iOn and the Citroën C-Zero, both launched in late 2010. With 30% of the market, PSA Peugeot Citroën is Europe’s leading EV manufacturer.
  • 8. The 6-speed manual compact automated gearbox used in the Peugeot and Citroën ranges since 2008 was a natural choice to mate with the diesel powertrain thanks to its automatic shift management system and role in optimising fuel consumption (an automatic gearbox would have resulted in higher carbon emissions). Similarly, the Stop & Start system (STT) on the diesel hybrid grew out of the Group’s experience with the Citroën C2 and C3. The latest generation STT has been broadly deployed across the Peugeot and Citroën line-ups since 2011. 2. Use a parallel design. PSA Peugeot Citroën’s hybrids are powered by two systems that can propel the vehicle separately or together: - The internal combustion engine works best in highway driving, and can be used to power any type of vehicle, while still delivering the safety and enjoyable driving experience customers want. - The electric motor is more efficient at start-up and low speeds (under 55 kmh), conditions that correspond to city driving—the most appropriate use for electric vehicles. - The two systems can also work together in certain circumstances, for example to provide extra boost during sudden acceleration when passing another vehicle. Hybrid vehicle performance is therefore directly comparable to that of a single powertrain vehicle with a larger engine, while offering breakthrough gains in terms of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions (around 35% less in combined-cycle driving, for equivalent performance). These two fundamental choices—leveraging the Group’s expertise in HDi engines and electric motors and using a parallel design—paved the way for an innovative architecture combining, for the first time, a front-mounted internal combustion engine and an electric motor in the rear.
  • 9. 3. Place the electric motor in the rear. Technically speaking, the front-mounted internal combustion engine powers the front wheels, while the electric motor on the rear axle assembly powers the rear wheels. This innovative architecture allows for four-wheel drive. What’s more, drive-by-wire technology eliminates the need for a standard 4WD differential, which improves mileage and makes for a roomier, more stylish passenger compartment. This architecture also makes it easier to install the technology on different platforms, so that the Group can ultimately offer hybrids across the model line-up. HYbrid4 technology offers a major performance breakthrough in terms of fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, which stand at 99 g -109 g per km, depending on the model. This represents a reduction of around 35% in combined-cycle driving. The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, 508 RXH and 508 HYbrid4 and the Citroën DS5 HYbrid4 can run in zero emission (ZEV) mode, which drastically reduces fuel consumption in city driving. A vehicle in ZEV mode offers an amazingly noiseless, carbon-free ride. HYbrid4 technology delivers high performance: • Maximum combined power of 147 kW/200 hp from the 2.0 litre HDi DPF engine (120 kW/163 hp) and the electric motor (27 kW/37 hp). Maximum torque of 300 Nm (front) and 200 Nm (rear). • Additional boost during sudden acceleration. • Four-wheel drive, offering the same off-road capabilities as a standard SUV, for added safety and peace of mind.
  • 10. HYbrid4 World Premiere Leveraging Technology for an Uncompromising Driving Experience Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4: High environmental performance and driving pleasure In February 2012, HYbrid4 technology came to market on the Peugeot 3008. Thanks to the environmentally friendly combination of diesel and electric energy, the 3008 crossover consumes only 3.8 litres per 100 km and emits just 99 g of CO2 per km. PSA Peugeot Citroën’s easy-to-use hybrid technology delivers even greater driving freedom, allowing motorists to choose from among four driving modes and providing the peace of mind offered by four-wheel drive.
