I’d like to tell you a story tonight about two periods in American history. They’re about 160 years apart, but in a lot of ways – very similar. Our story begins in the 1840s – the UW wasn’t started until 1861 -- In New York and the other population centers on the East coast, immigrants were arriving by boat, the cities were bustling, there was a war going on – the Civil War – the telegraph was just getting widespread use, and there was a need for news. Now think about today – the UW is still here, we’re sitting in a class that studies digital media, there’s a war going on and there is certainly a need for news – maybe now more than ever
