AND TECHNOLOGY
SUBJECT: Industrial Safety and Maintenance Engineering
TOPIC : Ergonomics

2. WHAT DOES IT MEAN…..?
Derived from two Greek words:
“Nomoi ” meaning natural laws
“Ergon” meaning work
Hence, ergonomists study human
capabilities in relationship to work
demand.
Ergonomics is the science and the art of fitting the job and the workplace to
workers’ needs.
It is the study of work
It is a way to make jobs/tasks
fit the employees better
It is a way to make work easier
3. OBJECTIVES
To optimize the integration of man and machine in order to improve
productivity and accuracy.
To develop workplace which fits with the needs of workers.
Arrangement of tools and equipment’s such that it minimizes mental and
physical strain on the worker by increasing the efficiency.
To reduce the fatigue of human while doing the job.
To attempt the minimization of risk of injury, illness and accidents
without losing productivity.
4. ADVANTAGES OF ERGONOMICS
Higher productivity
Increased safety of workers
Better integration of man-machine system.
Reduced employee turnover.
Less fatigue to operator.
Reduce unnecessary movements of operators.
Higher employee satisfaction.
It can help you do work safely
It can make you more comfortable
It can prevent injuries
5. Summary
Minimize ergonomic risk factors in your area
Stretch throughout the shift especially before and after
activities that require awkward positions or lifting
Pay attention to your body and know your physical
limitations
Report ergonomics issues through appropriate channels.
Ergonomic injuries are preventable, and you own your
own safety
