8. "Objective painting is not good painting unless it
is good in the abstract sense. A hill or tree
cannot make a good painting just because it is
a hill or tree. It is lines and colors put together
so that they may say something.”
-Georgia O'Keeffe.
10. Modernism
An art movement characterized by
the deliberate departure from
tradition, apparent in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries
The beginning of “pure
abstraction” or non-objective art in
the western world.
11. Non-Objective Art
A move to make shape and color
independent of nature and the already
observable visual world
Or giving form to the formless, for
example, MUSIC can be converted to
shapes and colors!
13. Some Musical Terms
• Legato …music performed smoothly
and connectedly
• Staccato…music marked by
disconnected parts, cut short, played
crisply

24. Color and Mood
MYTH: Colors have inherent emotional triggers.
TRUTH: Our moods and emotions do affect the colors we prefer. So we associate the colors
we prefer in those moods, with those moods. What do you associate with each of these
colors?
RED
ORANGE
YELLOW
GREEN

Abstract artists select then exaggerate or simplify the forms
suggested by the world around them.
Inventing shape and color for “things” that do not already have shape and color…(This is abstracting an idea, so it can be though of as abstraction, but it doesn’t involve looking at objects, so it is non-objective.
Non-objective art or pure abstraction can also communicate things like physical and emotional sensations (moods)…we are going to focus on music for our purposes.
Wassily Kandinsky was perhaps the first painter in recorded western history to make non-objective art. He had synesthesia, which is a very rare condition in which the brain confuses the senses. In his case, he actually could see music and hear paintings. He wrote a lot about different shapes and what sound they make as well as different colors. Even without Synesthesia, certain color combinations are going to seem loud, others quiet, some movement in a painting will appear fast and or highly rhythmic, some will seem smooth and slow….Think about these things as you look at this painting and the following ones.

For each slide, ask students what they hear. Try to get them to talk about staccato and legato passages, loud vs. soft, what kind of instrument or mood a color or color combinations have, what types of rhythms they are hearing…
"The term "Composition" can imply a metaphor with music. Kandinsky was fascinated by music's emotional power. Because music expresses itself through sound and time, it allows the listener a freedom of imagination, interpretation, and emotional response that is not based on the literal or the descriptive, but rather on the abstract quality that painting, still dependent on representing the visible world, could not provide.

tuart Davis viewed technological developments such as radio as forces which changed the fundamental experience of American life. He believed visual art needed to change in style in order to reflect the fragmentation brought by modern twentieth century media.
The rhythms of modern music, jazz and tango were strong influences.
Second generation abstract expressionists…
Get students to add their own associations and come up with sounds for each color.
Continue to ask students to talk about mood and sound of color as well as the paintings in general for the next few slides.
These are gradations. What are value ranges? What is the advantage of having a wide value range? What is the value of contrasting values?
MonochromaticVariations on a single hue are used in a monochromatic system. A range of values is often used to help increase the illusion of space. The advantage of this system is a high level of unity: all the colors are strongly related. Boredom, due to lack of variety, is a potential disadvantage. In Tracer-Side Order, Guy Goodwin used a variety of textures, patterns, and words to add interest to a fairly monochromatic painting.
Note the optical illusion created by this one. It looks like the lines are vibrating. The implied lines created by the corners add to this effect.
The audio explains it all.
These three videos are usually good conversation starters, gets them thinking about other videos etc.
