Future at Cincinnati State?
Logistics – and budget cuts
TUESDAY July, 01 2014
PREPARING FOR SUCCESS
“Whether you know it or not, you are setting yourself up for something
better.”
That was a key part of the message that State Rep. Denise Driehaus
(above) delivered this morning to a group of high school students from the
Upward Bound and Project GRAD programs at the kickoff of a three-day
Student Leadership Summit at the College.
Driehaus, who represents Cincinnati State in the Ohio House, told the
students in her keynote address that with hard work and perserverence
now, they will find success in their professional and most likely their personal
lives.
The simple fact that the students are spending part of their summer at
Cincinnati State, in a program designed to prepare them for college, is a
big first step in that direction, she said.
“You guys are young,” she said. “You’re setting yourselves up for success.”

Mark Romito, director of external affairs for AT&T, the lead sponsor of the
summit, carried much the same message in his remarks. He said his
corporation has consistently supported this event because it believes in the
importance of education, but also because it has a self-interest in helping
to develop future employees as well as well-educated, well-paid workers
of all sorts who will then become AT&T customers.
The theme of this year’s summit is cyber-bullying. Student participants will
form teams and debate whether it is or should be a crime, and if so what
should be done about it.
Rep. Driehaus noted that the Ohio Legislature recently passed a bill that
essentially tries to promote greater awareness of the issue, but said she
knows “that’s not enough.” Moreover, she said, students participating in
the Student Leadership Summit, simply by virtue of their age and familiarity
with the technology, are likely to understand the issue better than
members of the General Assembly.
Therefore, she said, if the student summit at Cincinnati State produces
coherent, reasonable recommendations for legislative action, she would
have them drafted into the form of a bill and introduce it in the Ohio House
if she could find a co-sponsor to make it a bi-partisan move.
Students are scheduled to report their conclusions in the form of skits on
Thursday afternoon.
