Military Bearing
"Military Bearing" and how it affects the Army as a whole Bearing, put simply, is the appearance
and demeanor of a person throughout the activities and circumstances that an individual is seen or
observed. An individual is largely judged by others through the bearing that the individual exudes
as he goes about his daily affairs, and thus it is very important that the person shows a bearing of
competence and professionalism at all times. Militaries since the beginning of recorded history
have set individual bearing at the core of the doctrine and values that all persons comprising the
force were instilled with from the start of the individual's service through to the end of his term.
Bearing of the individual soldier has always been a...show more content...
Soldiers constantly look to their leaders for guidance when developing bearing themselves, since
"Military Bearing" is instilled over the course of time, and doesn't just come "Factory Installed"
out of Initial Entry Training. Also, if the leader is unable or unwilling to uphold the standard that
he expects of his subordinates, not only will the soldiers look on the leader as being hypocritical
or having a "Double Standard", and his soldiers will be less likely to carry out any orders from
the superior, or at least won't put any appreciable amount of effort into carrying out those orders.
Respect comes from bearing. If a leader does not set the example of "Military Bearing", the only
respect that the leader will receive will be out empty reverence of the rank the individual may
hold, and not out of true respect or loyalty to the leader himself. "Military Bearing", the big
picture As stated in the previous sections, "Military Bearing" is at the core of every military
structure. Without bearing, structure is impossible. A soldier must possess a "Military Bearing"
in all his daily affairs; this sets him apart from the everyday person. The soldier must possess a
"Military Bearing" in his duties; this allows him to accomplish them in a timely fashion and do the
job properly as opposed to "Half Ass". A soldier must Possess "Military Bearing" in his interactions
with his superiors as well. Without this, the leader will not be able to

reasoning behind this goes back to situations where non commissioned officers would have to make

Soldiers are relying on their non commissioned officer to make a quick decision and trusting that
decisions made are the best out of all situations given. Non commissioned officers should be able to

Disrespect shown to anyone up the chain of command, from command leaders on all the way up to

In the United States Army, military bearing is the root in which every service member practices

and The Articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice show us how a military service member

themselves like they are adults and to show respect to the ranks above them. If a Soldier fails to

Military Core Values
In the Military there is a large dynamic of different persons and cultures. There are also many
deployments for training and combat. Because of this all Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen
need to be prepared for ethical dilemmas. A foundation based on strong standards, values, and
training will help prepare them for any dilemmas that may arise within an organization or
operational area. One of the things that can help within an organization, is the enforcement of
standards and core values. One example of core values is the Army Values. This can be remembered
by the acronym LDRSHIP. L is loyalty, D is duty, R is respect, S is selfless service, H is honor, I is
integrity, and P is personal courage (army.mil). This must be an all–around enforcement, not just
from the top down. Standards and core values apply to all within an organization. No one is above
or below them, what applies to one applies to all. Once standards and values are followed by all,
sustainment training will come next. Training is essential, but how to conduct it is the question. It is
a consensus felt throughout leadership, that it would be pointless to teach moral philosophy rank
and file (Robinson, 2007, pg. 26). Also who would teach it? Robinson brings up these two points, if

At the same time, being on time may influence substantially interpersonal relations and it is a
perfect characteristic of an individual. In this respect it should be said that if a person is late, it
is a bit irritating, but if he/she is late regularly, than it is quite a disturbing fact. On the one hand, it
proves that this person do not really respect those people who are waiting for him/her. On the
other hand, it proves that this person is absolutely irresponsible because being late means that the
person is unable to do his/her duties well. In contrast, being on time proves that the person is
highly responsible and is ready to fulfill his/her duty without delay. Such characteristics of an
individual are particularly important in army. At any rate, I, in person, know that I cannot be late
because I cannot be late for half an hour or even less late and just excuse myself and continue my
work. In fact, I am conscious of the fact that even a minute of delay will lead to the failure of the
entire operation that, in the military is absolutely unacceptable. It seems to be obvious that the
consequences of the lack of punctuality may lead to disastrous effects in my work. But I can

The fear of punishment is the basis for learning fast and what one should or should not do. It may
be a little harsh in the eyes of civilians but in the military, this is the only way. How is one
supposed to follow what is taught if there is no fear of punishment and reprisal for disobedience.
Training, retraining and punishment until perfection is achieved is military discipline. The
reason for this goes back to battlefield and combat conditions once again. It is through military
discipline that wars fought could be won or essentially save thousands of lives. Military
discipline is taught and learned with precision because these lessons are things that one should
always remember and one mistake could greatly impact a mission or change one's life. A good
example of this is soldiers who are not actively engaged in firing should always switch their
weapons on safe, they teach you and remind you and instill on you that these procedure needs to
be followed at all times. The reason why, if you accidentally pulled the trigger and is aimed at
yourself or a comrade, then you could potentially kill yourself or someone else thus lessening the
combat fire power and ultimately affecting the mission. Military discipline teaches one on making
these essential lessons to be learned as if it is second nature to you. One has military discipline
when you obey orders, follow procedures and continue the mission even if none of your superior is

The uniform provides protection for the wearer. It is a type of camouflage because of the pattern
to protect the wearer from being seen. It tells you s/he is a member of the US Army and its well

The wear and appearance of soldiers in the United States Army are while in uniform should be neat.
There should be no excess "things" in a person's pocket but it should lie down flat. The person
wearing the uniform should look neat and concise not drawing attention to themselves. Soldiers
should look like a unit or group with everyone blending in not standing out because they look
different. In the army it's important to be part of a team. This is important in the armed forces
especially because of what they do. In the army, marines, navy, and air force soldiers are called
upon to fight in the battle field. If soldiers cannot show unity by doing a simple basic thing of
wearing the same uniform alike how anyone could expect them to fight and win a nation's battle.
This is why the army has proved a guideline of regulations for soldiers in the United States Army to
wear and abide by. This regulation is army regulation six hundred dash one which covers the dress
and appearance of army uniforms in any given situation.

Military Bearing in Context of the US Navy
Navy Military Bearing Military bearing is something that applies to all branches of the United
States Navy but it manifests itself a little differently depending on the branch in question. This
report will focus on the United States Navy and military bearing and the core competencies and
codes that define said military bearing in a Navy context. A lot of what will be said below can be
applied, in whole or in part, to other branches of the United States Armed Forces. Navy Military
Bearing The Ohio recruitment page for the United States bearing has a definition of military
bearing that encapsulates the definition of the term through a Navy prism. Their main page
drives home the point that military bearing from a Navy perspective includes being professional,
enthusiastic, prideful of one's country and their position and making sure that one is in a clean,
crisp and proper uniform every single day of one's career. Also important is the chain of
command, which enlisted men and women of all United States Armed Forces branches are
expected to follow to the letter unless there is a clear reason why not. Even so, the commanding
and executive officers of the Ohio Navy branch are clearly shown and communicated on their
website (OH Navy, 2013). New Jersey Perspective A similar page for a Navy site in New Jersey,
specifically the VR–64 Joint Base MDL Condors, has much the same message on its own page.
That particular Navy base is the home of a C–130 Hercules Air Logistics task

Respect in the Military Essay
Respect in the Military It has been said that military standards are higher than the country demands
of its president. And that is true. President Clinton lied under oath. Perhaps that is not perjury, but an
army officer could not do that. Nor could army personnel have extramarital affairs. Kelly Flynn
found that out when she lost her position in the Air Force and years of pilot training went down the
drain. But for the Commander in Chief, it is another story. While it is true that the Commander in
Chief is able to get away with misbehavior, military personnel have been warned not to criticize him.
In fact, the various branches have been reminding troops that they can be prosecuted for publicly
condemning the Commander in...show more content...
Thus, just because Clinton admitted to doing the misdeeds, he cannot be criticized by military
members. In other words, one cannot accurately talk about President Clinton without getting into
serious trouble. The military may seem unnecessarily restrictive or antiquated but there is a
reason for the mandate. Officers must respect their superiors. It is simple as that. The reasoning
behind that is that routines and orders must be obeyed. After all, soldiers are being trained and
must be ready to go into combat at any time. The reason that the personnel cannot criticize their
leader should be obvious. If a war or conflict were to break out, it would significantly affect
performance as well as the world's perception about the United States. Thus, no matter how one
feels, there must be respect given to every single officer all the way up the line to the commander
in chief. The fact that Clinton himself has not been in compliance is immaterial. While he is the
Commander in Chief he is still considered to be a civilian. While it is important to give the
president respect, respect to Military Superior Commanding Officers and Non Commission Officers
is perhaps even more pertinent. If theoretically, when one is in the trenches with superiors, they must
be ready to accept orders willingly. The only way to accomplish this is with respect and military
courtesy. Thus, the fundamental purpose of having and enforcing a chain of command with

The Importance Of Military Bearing
I was directed to write an essay on the importance of military bearing. Ironically, this tasking was
due to a lapse in my personal ability to maintain and display my own military bearing. It is my
intention that through my writing I will be able to not only express the significance of said bearing,
but also to provide an insight to my own opinions and values pertaining to it, both professionally and
personally.
"It is comparatively simple to select the generals after a display of their military qualities on the
battlefield. The difficulty is when we must choose them prior to employment in active operations. . .
. The most important factor of all is character, which involves integrity, unselfish and devoted
purpose, a sturdiness of bearing when everything goes wrong and all are critical, and a willingness
to sacrifice self in the interest of the common good." – General George C. Marshall, 1944
The Army's field manual 6–22, which covers Army Leadership, defines military bearing as" The
projection of a commanding presence and a professional image of authority". To elaborate, it is the
appearance and demeanor of a person throughout the activities and circumstances that an individual
is seen or observed. An individual is largely judged by others through the behavior that the
individual exudes as he goes about his daily affairs, thus it is very important that the person shows a
bearing of competence and professionalism at all times. Military bearing is the standard of

if Soldiers appear in an improper uniform, they are required to correct it immediately; if they do not

directly related to the shortcoming. (1) The training, instruction, or correction given to a Soldier to

Military Bearing Essay

  • 1. Military Bearing "Military Bearing" and how it affects the Army as a whole Bearing, put simply, is the appearance and demeanor of a person throughout the activities and circumstances that an individual is seen or observed. An individual is largely judged by others through the bearing that the individual exudes as he goes about his daily affairs, and thus it is very important that the person shows a bearing of competence and professionalism at all times. Militaries since the beginning of recorded history have set individual bearing at the core of the doctrine and values that all persons comprising the force were instilled with from the start of the individual's service through to the end of his term. Bearing of the individual soldier has always been a...show more content... Soldiers constantly look to their leaders for guidance when developing bearing themselves, since "Military Bearing" is instilled over the course of time, and doesn't just come "Factory Installed" out of Initial Entry Training. Also, if the leader is unable or unwilling to uphold the standard that he expects of his subordinates, not only will the soldiers look on the leader as being hypocritical or having a "Double Standard", and his soldiers will be less likely to carry out any orders from the superior, or at least won't put any appreciable amount of effort into carrying out those orders. Respect comes from bearing. If a leader does not set the example of "Military Bearing", the only respect that the leader will receive will be out empty reverence of the rank the individual may hold, and not out of true respect or loyalty to the leader himself. "Military Bearing", the big picture As stated in the previous sections, "Military Bearing" is at the core of every military structure. Without bearing, structure is impossible. A soldier must possess a "Military Bearing" in all his daily affairs; this sets him apart from the everyday person. The soldier must possess a "Military Bearing" in his duties; this allows him to accomplish them in a timely fashion and do the job properly as opposed to "Half Ass". A soldier must Possess "Military Bearing" in his interactions with his superiors as well. Without this, the leader will not be able to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

These principles represents what the organization strongly believes in and governs the most basic customs and courtesies that all its members should abide by, otherwise legal repercussion and punishment is enforced that could ultimately result in separation from the organization." The standards must be met by Soldiers or they can face a number of repercussions such as, barring from re–enlistment or even separation. Non commissioned officers should always uphold the standards so that all Soldiers know what they are and what can happen to them if they do not meet the standard. "One is to observe a sense of calmness even in the most stressful situations, leaders of the United States Army should maintain their military bearing even in situations where it seems chaotic, out of control or a civilian would respond in panic." The reasoning behind this goes back to situations where non commissioned officers would have to make fast decisions in a war zone that may impact the lives of their Soldiers. In a battlefield situation their Soldiers are relying on their non commissioned officer to make a quick decision and trusting that decisions made are the best out of all situations given. Because of this all Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen need to be prepared for ethical dilemmas. A foundation based on strong standards, values, and training will help prepare them for any dilemmas that may arise within an organization or operational area. One of the things that can help within an organization, is the enforcement of standards and core values. One example of core values is the Army Values. This can be remembered by the acronym LDRSHIP. L is loyalty, D is duty, R is respect, S is selfless service, H is honor, I is integrity, and P is personal courage (army.mil). This must be an all–around enforcement, not just from the top down. Once standards and values are followed by all, sustainment training will come next. Training is essential, but how to conduct it is the question. On the one hand, it proves that this person do not really respect those people who are waiting for him/her. On the other hand, it proves that this person is absolutely irresponsible because being late means that the person is unable to do his/her duties well. In contrast, being on time proves that the person is highly responsible and is ready to fulfill his/her duty without delay. Such characteristics of an individual are particularly important in army. At any rate, I, in person, know that I cannot be late because I cannot be late for half an hour or even less late and just excuse myself and continue my work. In fact, I am conscious of the fact that even a minute of delay will lead to the failure of the entire operation that, in the military is absolutely unacceptable. It seems to be obvious that the consequences of the lack of punctuality may lead to disastrous effects in my work. The proper and faithful performance of duty is the standard. The value and efficiency of the soldier is measured, and the measure of his efficiency and value is not determined by the prominence of the duty which he performs. Military bearing is to conduct yourself with dignity and in such a manner to reflect credit upon the armed services. Military bearing exists when this individual is proud of their military service. When you exhibit military bearing you are showing lower enlisted soldiers how to act and giving them an example to follow. Knowing how to properly march, stand at attention, parade rest, as well as all other facing movements establishes one's ability to follow orders precisely. A lot of self–discipline comes with having good military bearing, which explains and reinforces the necessity to have it. Not everyone has good military bearing. There should be no excess "things" in a person's pocket but it should lie down flat. The person wearing the uniform should look neat and concise not drawing attention to themselves. Soldiers should look like a unit or group with everyone blending in not standing out because they look different. In the army it's important to be part of a team. This is important in the armed forces especially because of what they do. In the army, marines, navy, and air force soldiers are called upon to fight in the battle field. If soldiers cannot show unity by doing a simple basic thing of wearing the same uniform alike how anyone could expect them to fight and win a nation's battle. This is why the army has proved a guideline of regulations for soldiers in the United States Army to wear and abide by. This regulation is army regulation six hundred dash one which covers the dress and appearance of army uniforms in any given situation. Missing information during turnover can result in wasted man–hours, equipment damage, or can compromise the security of the command in which one works. Physical readiness standards are another element of military bearing. Physical readiness standards or better known as PRT's are held every six months for NAVY personnel. • 15. Military Bearing in Context of the US Navy Navy Military Bearing Military bearing is something that applies to all branches of the United States Navy but it manifests itself a little differently depending on the branch in question. This report will focus on the United States Navy and military bearing and the core competencies and codes that define said military bearing in a Navy context. A lot of what will be said below can be applied, in whole or in part, to other branches of the United States Armed Forces. Navy Military Bearing The Ohio recruitment page for the United States bearing has a definition of military bearing that encapsulates the definition of the term through a Navy prism. Their main page drives home the point that military bearing from a Navy perspective includes being professional, enthusiastic, prideful of one's country and their position and making sure that one is in a clean, crisp and proper uniform every single day of one's career. Also important is the chain of command, which enlisted men and women of all United States Armed Forces branches are expected to follow to the letter unless there is a clear reason why not. Even so, the commanding and executive officers of the Ohio Navy branch are clearly shown and communicated on their website (OH Navy, 2013). New Jersey Perspective A similar page for a Navy site in New Jersey, specifically the VR–64 Joint Base MDL Condors, has much the same message on its own page. That particular Navy base is the home of a C–130 Hercules Air Logistics task Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Respect in the Military Essay Respect in the Military It has been said that military standards are higher than the country demands of its president. And that is true. President Clinton lied under oath. Perhaps that is not perjury, but an army officer could not do that. Nor could army personnel have extramarital affairs. Kelly Flynn found that out when she lost her position in the Air Force and years of pilot training went down the drain. But for the Commander in Chief, it is another story. While it is true that the Commander in Chief is able to get away with misbehavior, military personnel have been warned not to criticize him. In fact, the various branches have been reminding troops that they can be prosecuted for publicly condemning the Commander in...show more content... Thus, just because Clinton admitted to doing the misdeeds, he cannot be criticized by military members. In other words, one cannot accurately talk about President Clinton without getting into serious trouble. The military may seem unnecessarily restrictive or antiquated but there is a reason for the mandate. Officers must respect their superiors. It is simple as that. The reasoning behind that is that routines and orders must be obeyed. After all, soldiers are being trained and must be ready to go into combat at any time. The reason that the personnel cannot criticize their leader should be obvious. If a war or conflict were to break out, it would significantly affect performance as well as the world's perception about the United States. Thus, no matter how one feels, there must be respect given to every single officer all the way up the line to the commander in chief. The fact that Clinton himself has not been in compliance is immaterial. While he is the Commander in Chief he is still considered to be a civilian. While it is important to give the president respect, respect to Military Superior Commanding Officers and Non Commission Officers is perhaps even more pertinent. If theoretically, when one is in the trenches with superiors, they must be ready to accept orders willingly. The only way to accomplish this is with respect and military courtesy. Thus, the fundamental purpose of having and enforcing a chain of command with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Importance Of Military Bearing I was directed to write an essay on the importance of military bearing. Ironically, this tasking was due to a lapse in my personal ability to maintain and display my own military bearing. It is my intention that through my writing I will be able to not only express the significance of said bearing, but also to provide an insight to my own opinions and values pertaining to it, both professionally and personally. "It is comparatively simple to select the generals after a display of their military qualities on the battlefield. The difficulty is when we must choose them prior to employment in active operations. . . . The most important factor of all is character, which involves integrity, unselfish and devoted purpose, a sturdiness of bearing when everything goes wrong and all are critical, and a willingness to sacrifice self in the interest of the common good." – General George C. Marshall, 1944 The Army's field manual 6–22, which covers Army Leadership, defines military bearing as" The projection of a commanding presence and a professional image of authority". To elaborate, it is the appearance and demeanor of a person throughout the activities and circumstances that an individual is seen or observed. An individual is largely judged by others through the behavior that the individual exudes as he goes about his daily affairs, thus it is very important that the person shows a bearing of competence and professionalism at all times. Commanders should consider administrative corrective measures before deciding to impose nonjudicial punishment. Trial by court–martial is ordinarily inappropriate for minor offenses unless lesser forms of administering discipline would be ineffective (see MCM, Part V, and chap 3, AR 27 –10). b. One of the most effective administrative corrective measures is extra training or instruction (including on–the–spot correction). For example, if Soldiers appear in an improper uniform, they are required to correct it immediately; if they do not maintain their housing area properly, they must correct the deficiency in a timely manner. If Soldiers have training deficiencies, they will be required to take extra training or instruction in subjects directly related to the shortcoming. (1) The training, instruction, or correction given to a Soldier to correct deficiencies must be directly related to the deficiency. It must be oriented to improving the Soldier's performance in his or her problem area. Corrective measures may be taken after normal duty hours. Such measures assume the nature of training or instruction, not Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A soldier's job is hazardous, sometime even life and death, the military needs only the best in its ranks, so a soldier expected to behave as a professional at all times. How the public sees a single soldier does affect how all soldiers are viewed in the public's eye; this includes their physical appearance. Every morning a soldier makes their bed, conducts PT, and puts on their uniform. While making a bed is a small task to accomplish, it is an important one, a well–made bed looks neat, organized, and clean; very much the way a soldier is pictured by the vast majority of the public. Doing PT every day takes dedication, strength, and self–discipline to accomplish the task; everything that a soldier must possess to be successful. Looking and being physically fit is often overlooked, however it's an important part of soldiering; SMA Daily once said in an interview with Army Times Feb 18, 2015, "It might not be the most important thing you do that day, but it is the most important thing you do every day. Because a soldier who's physically fit will look and feel like a soldier, and if you look and feel like a soldier, you'll act like a soldier." Along with physical fitness comes the proper wear of the uniform; a proper uniform must be clean, have tapes properly aligned, and fit properly. The first thing that people notice about a soldier is their uniform, not the person, if a uniform looks poorly, so will the rest of the Army in that individuals eyes. If worn properly the uniform represents professionalism and discipline to the highest of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
