3. submarine
I've taken a lot of inspiration from the film submarine, its set in wales and was directed by Richard Ayoade. The film
on the whole I think is filmed beautifully, its unique style is what made this film stand out to me. The film is
accompanied by a really nice soundtrack by Alex tuner (singer, arctic monkeys) which fits with the imagery perfectly.
I think after watching this I was really aware of the music that accompanies the images and how they compliment
each other.
Theres a scene about half way through the film where the main character Oliver describes his memories as an old
film in his imagination and the film makers have them shown the audience how Oliver sees it in his mind. Then there
is about two minutes of footage shown as if played on a old fashioned projector. I love this style and will definitely
be using this for my music video.
The filming in this particular scene alternates from first person to third giving is an insight into their relationship. It
shows us the cute playful side but also some more emotive simple shots. What I really like about this is its clear that
they are in love and are together, I think the feelings are reflected really nicely and it’s a really unique perspective
for the audience to experience.
I also love the editing and the colours, its very aesthetically pleasing and is visually really pretty. Really want to edit
my video in a similar way so that my my shots seem faded and old. I want it to be very much like a film reel, like it
feel as as though their a couple in a romantic movie.

5. Scene from the no-kiss list
• There is a scene in the film ‘no-kiss list’ where the main character is being
filmed on an old fashioned camera. The footage it really grainy and rustic
looking. He's just filming her talking as he asks her questions. He's quite close
so it becomes more personal because you can see her facial expressions
change as she talks about her past. I remembered this scene because it looked
really pretty, aesthetically pleasing and was actually quite moving. As she was
being filmed, as the audience, we felt like she was suddenly quite exposed and
the emotion was quite raw? We were in her personal space and it was a
completely different perspective compared to the rest of the film. The camera
angles are slanted and wonky, the shots are shaky and aren't always in focus
but it works really nicely to show that the filming style has changed. Its really
clear and easy to understand for the audience which is important.
6. 1950- King Princess
https://youtu.be/LNxWTS25Tbk
I really like the style of this video, and I want to do something similar.
Although i'm not a huge fan of the editing of the video and how some clips overlap
because I don't feel like it will suit my video.
This video uses lots of little clips of a couple and puts them all together. The editing is
really pretty and the video is full of colour. It’s a similar theme to the scene from
submarine but more modern sort of. It contains some scenes that are first person, some
that are third and then some that are lip syncing and live performances. I like how this
video is really cute, it shows you the relationship but is also broken up by lip syncing and
the live performance. The song is really soft and gentle and I think this has been
reflected in the video by using warm colours like pinks purples and oranges.
They chose filters that make the videos appear intimate and dream-like to make it more
romantic .
I think in shots like this one, my filming
style will be really similar->
7. A Team- Ed Sheeran
I chose this music video because of the interesting style and
colour. In this video the main actress is the key focus of almost
every shot and we follow her throughout the video until the
end when we see her OD. The video follows a narrative and
tells us a story using clear imagery and links to the song lyrics.
The video uses lighting really nicely to show good levels of
contrast throughout the video. I really like how there’s a shot
where she is crying and wiping away the mascara from under
her eyes and it creates a really strong, clear visual for the
audience. The contrast of the mascara on the face is shown
really nicely through the black and white editing and I think I
will be really aware of the choice of colours that my actor will
wear to make sure I get that same level of ‘contrast’ so I don’t
loose any details on clothing or the facial expressions when
editing. If the exposure is too high, then a lot of important
details will be lost and I think there are parts of this video
especially at the beginning where she is outside and its really
bright, its harder to get that definition that I will want in my
video. On the other hand, the bright lighting and sun allowed
for some nice shots where the silhouette was really clear and
the sun beams were visible and it was very aesthetically
pleasing (top right).
9. Conventions
• Some of oasis’ music videos are in black and white which links nicely to my
video as I'm also plan for mine to be in black and white. It makes the videos
seem quite retro which I really like. Its also alternative and reflects the music
the band play.
• Unlike my video, lots of their other music videos contain lip syncing and live
performances. I've chosen to not include these as I don’t feel as though they
would suit the song I have chosen, in the real songbird music video, Liam is
walking through a park singing and playing the guitar but I wanted to show
the relationship and the lust he was feeling as the song is so personal, I want
it all to be from his point of view almost and take that personal element a
step further and show the audience why he wrote the song, who its about
and why he feels that way.
• similarly to my video, not many of their official music videos follow strong, if
any, narratives. I think this is because often its them doing a live
performance it can be hard to interlink that with a narrative but I also think
for the band, the music speaks for itself and leaves the audience to interpret
the lyrics in their own way instead of attaching a story line to it. I quite like
this so even though mine doesn’t really follow a story line, it has a bit of
ambiguity about it and I think that engages the audience more.
10. Genre Chacteristics
Oasis were one of the leading bands in the Britpop movement in the UK.
Britpop traditionally is more of a alternative rock/ pop mix that became very popular
in the 90s and was well known for its unique style and its reflection of British culture.
it quickly became very popular because of its often darker, more political lyrics that
could often be seen as controversial that were inspired mainly by American grunge
music.
In recent years Britpop has reemerged in the music industry with bands such as Axe
and the creases and the DMAs.
The typical instruments used are- vocals, electric guitar, electric bass, acoustic guitar,
keyboard, drums and piano
11. Chosen approach/justification
• I have chosen to do my music video in the style of someone
recounting memories of their partner. I want it all to be in the
perspective of first person and have their memories presented in the
style of an old fashioned film. This idea doesn’t link to the typical
Britpop style or videos so it wont reflect many of their key
characteristics but the song I chose by oasis stands out from the
others as it more sentimental and romantic compared to their other
music. And I feel like the lyrics in the song inspired me to take a
different direction with my video. Its very clearly a love song and I
wanted to express the lust the writer Liam was feeling through my
imagery .
13. Experiment 1 - Process
For my first experiment, me Tristan and Molly went out to do a variety of different shots, try out different
techniques and play around with camera angles. We used the tripod to take steady shots and we found for
some more focused shots like the portrait style shot of just my face, the detail was actually quite important
so having the tripod made it much easier to get a well focused shot set up properly, we were quite proud of
the outcome and I really liked how it looked once I edited them. I think its clear from the video we were
really just trying some different ideas out but it was helpful because I wanted some half decent footage to
practice editing and experiment in premier.
When it came to the editing, I was experimenting with tones when putting my shots in black and white,
adjusting the exposure, contrast, shadows and highlights, reducing the saturation entirely until I was happy
with the filter I had created. I chose one shot to begin with, and played around with the tones and exposure
et. Until I was happy then I copy and pasted the attributes and then adjusted them to each individual shot,
because where the lighting is slightly different in some shots than others it means that the amount of
contrast or shadows etc. is needed will vary and I want them all to look similar so on shot isn't really dark
and heavy and the next is very bright and there is less darker tones. But this would be a good way to show a
change in mood/time of day/weather (pathetic fallacy)
I slowed down lots of my shots and reused some but made them faster/slower or even reversed them. This
allowed me to manipulate the same shots in lots of different ways and really play around with the impact
different variables have on the viewer.

14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
I really liked the style of this experiment. I was happy with the editing but in my second experiment I'm
going to explore more of the effects and try to make it look more rustic and old fashioned as I felt this was
very neat in how it transitioned and was presented and want my final to be much more ‘ rough round the
edges’. I think the strong black and white made the video much more aesthetically pleasing but also
emotional, almost like the video had been stripped down and the characters had become more venerable.
It makes the video appear more dark and like there is more depth behind the snippets we see.
My experiment has quite a sad overall feeling which is almost the opposite of what I want for my video,
but I think its really interesting how that has developed due to the editing and the slower movement in the
video. I feel like its almost a squeal to my video after the relationship has ended for whatever reason, but
this video became very dark which wasn’t my original intention but I feel like it actually works really nicely
and the shots, music and colours all compliment each other but I wont be including the darker side in my
main video as I want it to be joyful and uplifting whereas this feels gloomy and almost angry. But I think it
has been really useful to see how easy it is to change to mood entirely and to see one extreme to then
now try and create the other.
I feel like the imagery in this experiment was really nice and I really liked the shots although they aren't
quite what I was imagining for my video. I think some of the shots are really picturesque and powerful
and leave the viewer to interpret the ambiguous narrative I created. I think this experiment was really
helpful in developing my ideas for my final video, its shown me what works well and the impacts of
changing to speed, cutting to another shot when the beat changes or shifts and how the lighting reflects
the mood of the ‘characters’ and can shift the whole tone of the scene/ video.
I think in this experiment I definitely included the personal element that I want to reinforce in my final
piece. It feels as though you are getting a insight into their personal thoughts, feelings and memories
and I really like that. I think it makes the video more emotive and therefore more engaging
15. Experiment 2 - Process
I did some shots of Tristan outside in a similar style to how I want to film my video. I then
put the shots into premier and edited them in the same way I did with my first
experiment. Unfortunately I only got two shots so I did’to have a lot of footage to work
with but I still had a play around with some of the visual effects. I didn’t have a lot of
time to work on this experiment but it was good to see how a shit similar to one in my
actual video would look in this style. I also explored some more of the effects on premier
trying to find a combination that would give the video the style I want. I actually
struggled quite a bit with this so I plan to do some research online to fin some tutorials
to improve my video.
16. Reflection
• I think I will film my real thing free hand because with the
tripod it didn't look as natural and ‘sloppy’ as I want it too, I
want my video to appear really natural and free flowing not
forced or set up. I think for my aesthetic to work the video
needs to be a bit out of focus at points or unsteady because
that’s how it would look if it was just someone filming their
girlfriend. But I think trying some shots with the tripod was
really helpful because I was able to tell that to make it look
natural it needed to be freehand.
17. Experiment 3
• For my third experiment I took some shots of Adam at the park using my smaller camera (sony
cybershot) from home instead of the college camera. I filmed free-hand and in a different more open
environment. I tried filming whilst moving and staying still and considered how all my shots could
transition into each other. I tried to vary my shots so I had some more close up and personal and others
of him walking away from me.
• We filmed in the homestead park and it was actually really vibrant and full of flowers so I think it would
have been a shame to film somewhere so pretty to then strip the colour and have the video in black and
white.
• I struggled with the settings on my camera and in the end the footage turned out to be bad quality and
unusable. But despite this it was nice to experiment with a different space and explore the possibilities,
making the most of resources like trees, benches etc and try and include them as props almost, using
them to zoom out of before focusing a shot on Adam which gave it a simple transition into the next
scene. It was nice to practice potential transitions, its given me a better idea of what I will do in my real
video in making it appear smoother and more adventurous
18. reflection
• When looking back at my footage of Adam, I found that
the quality was really poor. I think this was due to my
camera settings being wrong for the shot. So the
camera wouldn't focus and the footage was blurry and a
little bit jumpy. It’s a shame because the setting for
filming was really nice and the lighting was good but
unfortunately it was ruined because I did not have the
camera in the correct settings. I think after this
experiment I will film either using a college camera or
my phone as I struggle to understand the functions on
my digital camera and don’t want to risk making the
same mistake again when filming my real video.
