2. The Lascaux Caves The Lascaux Caves are located in Southern France This particular picture depicts hunters and gatherers killing deer for meat. The Lascaux Caves contain paintings from the Paleolithic time and all paintings can be broken down into three main groups: animals, human beings, and abstract signs.

3. Weapons & Tools Many of these tools and weapons were created by hand. The rocks above were used as a type of razor blade. The edges were “hammered” off to create a sharp instrument used for cutting materials and animal flesh. The images on the bottom are examples of arrowheads or spearheads used to kill Bison, Deer, and other animals, for food.

4. Paleolithic Societies “When a young man kills much meat, he thinks himself as a chief or big man and the rest of us as his servants. We cannot accept this. Someday his pride will make him kill somebody. So we always speak of his meat as worthless. That way, we cool his heart and make him gentle.” Different civilizations and different cultures had many ways of going about things. This quote is a perfect example of what is frowned upon in this society. This is how order within the tribe was kept.

5. Agricultural Revolution For thousands of years, the inhabitants who lived on the American continents lived off of the land. Then in 5000 B.C. near present day Mexico many groups of people began to discover farming. They realized that they could plant crops such as corn, pumpkins, potatoes, and squash, and by doing so, could better provide for the needs of their people. This new technology spread from Mexico outward to other parts of the Southwest, so that by 3000 B.C. many groups of people in the region were actively practicing farming

6. FARMING With Agricultural Farming animals were more dependent on humans to survive. They were no longer able to survive in the wild. This was important for breeding the animals for the needs of the people. Sheep were used for wool, cows for their milk, and chickens for their eggs.

7. Changes in Behavior Because of The agricultural revolution and the beginning stages of farming. Most of the farmers and people in that particular civilization had no more need to enter into the wild and gather their food. Hunting was becoming a lost art and most relied on farming for food and clothing. It was a drastic change in time and today we have seen the evolution of this process and what it has become.

8. Paleolithic women Women were involved in many important things such as weaving clothing, agricultural labor which generated food for the village, and giving birth. Because of these many important tasks, women were highly respected and were generally equal to man. In time, animal driven plows took their places and views on women changed.

9. Patriarchy in Practice Women were at the disposal of men. A women who was caught cheating could be put to death by her husband but the opposite would be untrue. A man was the head and in some cultures the women was loyal to her husband and when out in the public, would be covered from head to toe.
