2. The Angling Club of Tolmin—Der Fischereiverein Tolmin
The Angling Club of Tolmin came into being in 1947 as the Fishing
Cooperative for Tolmin and ever since then it has been managing
the waters of the Tolmin fishing district. Its most noteworthy project
is the successful repopulation of the marble trout. Over the last two
decades of the project this wonderful local fish has returned to most
of its original habitat, where it had been under heavy pressure from
the brown trout and their hybrids. The project is ongoing in coop-
eration with the biological station Tour de Valat, France. Due to the
success of the marble trout project the Club has recently also begun
a project to repopulate the autochtonous adriatic grayling, which
has also been hybridising with introduced Danube graylings. The
Angling Club of Tolmin is also the first institution in the world to
successfully breed both marble trout and grayling in its fish farms.

5. Bela
The Bela springs forth beneath the Stol mountain, above Breginj,
and covers 4.7 km before joining the Nadiža in Podbela. In the 1930s
its course was almost completely regulated, divided by various dams

7. Bača
From below Slatnik and Lajnar the Bača wends its long way through
the narrow Bača valley, constantly accompanied by the road and
railroad, towards the Idrijca, which it joins at Bača pri Modreju. The
Bača is 21.4 km long, of which the first 3 km are a breeding pre-
serve for the marble trout. The remainder of the river is open for
anglers and divided by the Klavže village dam into two parts, the
upper course is home to all species of trout, except rainbows, as well
as bull-heads, some grayling and occasional cyprinids. The rainbow
trout is present in the lower course, as well as more grayling than
upstream.

Koritnica
The Koritnica is a small river that arises from several streams be-
neath the village of Rut and wends its 4.7 km way to the village of
Koritnica, where it enters the Bača. Its banks are densely wooded, its
flow is swift and just above the village of Koritnica it drops swiftly to
the Bača valley. It is home to trout (except rainbows) and bull-head.
Die Koritnica ist ein kleiner Fluss, der aus mehreren Bächen unterh-
alb des Dorfes Rut gespeist wird. Auf ihrem 4,7 km langen Weg windet

The Kneža is a typical small alpine river, collecting water below Vo-
gel and Rodica, and making its way down narrow valleys and gorges
to the Bača river, which it joins between Kneža and Klavže. Its 8.3
km are all open to anglers and home to all species of trout, except
rainbows, and the bull-head.

(Salmo trutta marmoratus)
The marble trout is an endemic species found in all the local riv-
ers. It grows to a much greater size than all other species of trout in
the region, with the largest individuals exceeding 120 cm in length
and 20 kg in weight. It is named for its distinctive marbled pattern,
which is most pronounced on the gill covers and on the large head,
which can be as much as a quarter of the whole body length. The
marble trout’s size and timidity makes it a prized fish for sport fish-
ermen as every catch is a great success for the fisherman. The season
for marble trout is from the 1st of April to the 30th of September
and the minimum catch size iz 60 centimetres. It feeds on aquatic
insects and other fish.
Die Marmorata ist eine endemische Art, die in allen lokalen Flüssen
vorkommt. Sie wächst viel größer ab, als alle anderen Forellenarten

9. Grayling—Äsche
(Thymallus thymallus)
Besides the marble trout, the grayling is the only other endemic sal-
monid fish in our waters that mostly feeds on aquatic insects. The
grayling is found in all the district rivers, except the Kneža, Korit-
nica and Bela. Local graylings grow to 60 centimetres in length and
2 kg in weight. Graylings have a distinctive long and high, brightly
coloured dorsal fin and are a very good sport fish. The grayling sea-
son lasts from the 16th of May to the 31st of October and the mini-
mum catch size is 45 centimetres.

Hybrids—Hybriden
Hybrids result from the mating of brown and marble trout. Visually
they can be vary varied, spanning the gamut from marble to brown
trout. They are found wherever marble and brown trout populations
coexist. Hybrids grow to 1 metre in length and 10 kg in weight and
may be caught from the 1st of April to the 31st of October, the mini-
mum catch size is 26 centimetres. Like brown and marble trout, they
feed on aquatic insects and other fish.

The chub is a ciprinid species endemic to the Adriatic. Chub typical-
ly live in schools and are recognized by their cylindrical, elongated
body covered in large scales. They grow to 70 centimetres in length
and 5 kg in weight. The minimum catch size is 30 cm and chub may
be caught in April and from the 1st of July to the 31st of October.
Chub breed in May and June and are found in all the larger rivers of
the Tolmin district. Chub feed on water organisms, plants and fruit.

Like the chub, the barbel is an endemic ciprinid. Barbels also live
in schools and have distinctive reddish fins, particularly dorsal fins.
They grow to 70 centimetres and 4 kg in weight and the minimum
catch size is 30 cm. Like the chub, barbels breed in May and June,
and may be caught in April and from the 1st of July to the 31st of
October. Barbels live mostly in the Soča downstream of Kobarid, in
the lake at Most na Soči and in the Idrijca. They feed on riverbed

Wie der Döbel ist diese Barbenart ein endemischer Cyprinid. Barben
leben ebenso in Schulen und verfügen über ausgeprägte rötliche Flos-
sen, insbesondere die Rückenflossen. Sie werden bis zu 70 cm lang und
4 kg schwer. Das Mindestmaß beträgt 30 cm. Wie der Döbel laichen
Barben im Mai und Juni, und können im April und vom 1. Juli bis
zum 31. Oktober gefangen werden. Barben leben vor allem in der Soča
unterhalb von Kobarid, im See bei Most na Soči und in der Idrijca.

Besides the aforementioned species, our waters are also home to
many smaller species that should not be caught. They are the brook
barbel (Barbus meridionalis caninus), blageon (Leuciscus souf-
fia muticellus), minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) and river bull-head
(Cottus gobio). A very rare species in our waters is the tench (Tinca
tinca).
Neben den genannten Arten sind in unseren Gewässern auch viele
kleinere Arten heimisch, die jedoch nicht gefangen werden dürfen.
Dazu zählen die Hundsbarbe (Barbus meridionalis caninus), der
Strömer (Leuciscus souffia muticellus), die Elritze (Phoxinus phoxi-
nus) und die Groppe (Cottus gobio). Eine sehr seltene Art in unseren
Gewässern ist auch die Schleie (Tinca tinca).

11. Rainbow trout—Regenbogen-
forelle (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
The rainbow trout is native to North America and has spread around
Europe due to its ease of breeding and adaptability to various local
conditions. It does not hybridise with the marble trout and presents
no direct threat to the larger species, however, it does compete for
food and space. It is distinguished by its rainbow coloured flanks
and small spots over its whole body. It grows to 80 centimetres and 8
kg in weight and is a generalist feeder. Because of this and its agres-
sive nature it is a very popular sport fish. The rainbow can be caught
from the 1st of April to the 31st of October and the minimum catch
size is 24 centimetres.
Die Regenbogenforelle ist in Nordamerika heimisch und hat sich in
Europa aufgrund der Einfachheit der Zucht und ihrer Anpassungs-
fähigkeit verbreitet. Sie kann sich nicht mit der Marmorata vermis-
chen und stellt daher keine direkte Bedrohung für die größere Art dar,
konkurriert mit ihr jedoch um Nahrung und Raum. Sie zeichnet sich
durch ihre farbigen Regenbogenflanken und kleine Flecken auf dem
ganzen Körper aus. Die Regenbogenforelle wird bis zu 80 Zentimeter
lang und 8 kg schwer, wobei sie sich sehr vielfältig ernährt. Aus diesem
Grund und ihrer aggressiven Natur ist sie ein sehr beliebter Sportfisch.

The Zlata Ribica (lit. Little Goldfish) is a family-run fishing hotel
in Idrija pri Bači. The hotel is just 20 metres from the river Idri-
jca, 5 minutes driving from the Trebuščica and Bača rivers and a 10

in the family for four generations now, and the hotel can provide
you all the necessary information for a good day’s fishing, as well as

The Želinc tourist farm stands above the confluence of the Cerknica
and Idrijca rivers, spreading out on an slight rise, removed from
the noise of the road but still easily accessible. It is a perfect loca-
tion for fly fishing afficionados, with the river Idrijca, rich in trout
