The main topic of this talk is "Shima Shotai," a new typeface designed for
some endangered languages in Japan, called Ryukyuan Languages.

この発表ではしま書体”についてお話します。消滅危機言語である琉球諸
語のために作られた新しいフォントセットです。

In order to understand this new typeface, you need background knowledge
about endangered languages in Japan. So, firstly, I will introduce these
languages, and then go on to talk about a writing system constructed for
Ryukyuan Languages, and at the end I will explain about "Shima Shotai."
Firstly, I want you to know is that, in Japan, there are many different
languages other than the Standard Japanese, and that most of these
languages are in danger of extinction. I mean, the numbers of the speakers of
these languages are declining.

いての背景知識が必要です。消滅危機言語についての話を最初にします。
そのあとに、琉球諸語のために作った表記法の話、最後にしま書体の話で
す。
まず知っていただきたいことは、日本国内にも標準日本語とは大きく異な
る言語が存在し、多くが消滅の危機にあるということです。

This map shows the endangered languages in Japan, which were recognized by UNESCO in 2009.
From the north, Ainu, Hachijo, Amami, Kunigami, Okinawa, Miyako, Yaeyama, and Yonaguni. Among these
languages, a number of Ryukyuan Languages are included.

Amami, Kunigami, Okinawa, Miyako, Yaeyama, Yonaguni are all Ryukyuan Languages.
Although these languages are sister languages of the Standard Japanese, there is no mutual intelligibility. In other
words, native speakers of the Standard Japanese cannot understand Ryukyuan Languages.

To give you an idea of a Ryukyuan language, I will show you a short video in which a man is speaking one of the
Ryukyuan languages. They speak Kurima dialect of Miyako Ryukyuan.
これは国連機関のUNESCOが2009年に日本における消滅危機言語と認定
した言語の一覧です。北から、アイヌ語、八丈語、奄美語、国頭語、沖縄
語、宮古語、八重山語、与那国語です。これらの言語のなかにこの発表で

5. Kurima Dialect of Miyako Ryukyuan

Compared with standard Japanese, you can hear very different rhythm
and sounds.
Most native speakers of Ryukyuan Languages are elderly people. And,
at the present time, almost all of them can use Japanese proficiently.
This is because they were born in Japan and educated in Japanese.
They can also have a good command of the Japanese writing system;
Hira-gana, Kata-kana, and Kanji (Chinese characters).
However, Ryukyuan Languages consist of more sounds than Japanese.
It means that letters, especially Kana letters, which were developed to
write Japanese are not enough for writing Ryukyuan Languages.

琉球諸語を母語とする人々というのは、年配者が多いですが、そのほとん
ど全員が現在では日本語を読み書きすることができます。これは、彼らは

す。彼らは日本語の表記法で用いる仮名文字と漢字を使いこなすことがで

language communities: two dialects of Okinoerabu-Ryukyuan and Ikema
dialect of Miyako-Ryukyuan. As you can see, people in their 40s understand
their local language as much as the fluent native speakers in their 70s do.
There are many people who wish to learn, speak, and write their local
language and there are many language revitalization movemenets going
on.@@

8. The “Gap”
Japanese native speakers have a
writing system for general use.
Ryukyuan native speakers have never
had such a writing system.
＠＠However, as I just said, the writing system for the Standard
Japanese is not enough to write Ryukyuan languages, which have more
sounds than the Standard Japanese.＠＠
This illustrates the existence of a "gap" in Japan.
As you know, the native speakers of Japanese have a general writing
system.
They can write their native language.
On the other hand, native speakers of Ryukyuan do not have such a
writing system.

I will say something about the Ryukyuan writing system.
Actually, there has never been a general or unified writing system of
Ryukyuan languages. Even language researchers have used a variety of
writing systems that were not shared with the other peopole.
In light of this, I reached the conclusion that we need to construct a
general writing system of Ryukyuan, as Japanese has a general writing

I collaborated with many researchers and published "Unified Writing
system for the Ryukyuan Languages" in 2015 to put forward this idea.
＠＠しかし、さきほども申し上げたとおり、琉球諸語は日本語標準語にな
い音を多く持っているため、日本語を読み書きするための文字だけでは十
分に書き表すことができません。＠＠
この事実は、日本国内にある種の格差が存在するということです。すなわ
ち、日本語を母語とする人々は自分の母語を書き表す手段を持ちますが、
琉球諸語を母語とする人々は自分の母語を書きあらわす手段を持たないと
いうことです。

実は、琉球諸語については、言語研究者の間でもコンセンサスを得たよう
な汎用的表記法が存在していませんでした。そこで、日本語に表記法があ
るように、研究者でも一般の人でも共通して使えるような琉球諸語の表記
法を確立する必要があると私は考えました。
そこで、研究者を集め、この本の中で提案したのが「琉球諸語統一的表記
法」です。

☞ Using Kana -based letters including “new”
letters for Ryukyuan languages.
☞ Not using Kanji (Chinese characters)
☞ Leaving a space between words
☞ All dialects of Ryukyuan languages are written
under one system.
By using this "Unified Writing System," you can write all dialects of the
Ryukyuan languages with one system.
This system uses Kana-based letters mainly. To do this, we needed to
add many "new" Kana letters to write the Ryukyuan languages.
Because we wanted a phonetic writing system we didn’t use Kanji.
In another difference from the Japanese writing system, we left a space
between words like in English.

This is the chart of all the Ryukyuan letters. Much bigger than that of
standard Japanese!
この「統一的表記法」を使うと琉球諸語のすべての方言を同じ1つの体系で書く
ことができます。そして、この表記法は仮名文字を基本としておりまして、そ
のために日本語では使わない、いわば新しい仮名文字を追加しました。
音を直感的に書けるように漢字は基本的には採用していません。
仮名文字だけでも読みやすいように、英語のように、語と語の間に空間を空け
た分かち書きをします。

This is because many Ryukyuan languages have the consonants, vowels, and
their combinations that the Standard Japanese does not have.
Let’s take a look at the vowels. The Standard Japanese has five vowels, i, e, a,
o, u. On the other hand, Yonaguni has only three vowels, Hateruma-Yaeyama
has six, and Ura-Amami has seven. Miyako-Ogami has five vowels like the
Standard Japanese, but their qualities are different from those of the Standrd
Japanese.

これは多くの琉球諸語が、日本語標準語にはない母音や子音、その組み合わせ
を持っているからです。
母音を例に見てみましょう。日本語標準語はi, e, a, o, uの5つの母音をもってい
ます。しかし、琉球諸語は、このスライドにあるように、与那国語のように3つ
しか母音がないもの、八重山語波照間方言のように6つの母音を持つもの、奄美
語浦方言のように7つの母音を持つものがあります。また宮古語大神方言のよう
に、数は日本語標準語と同じ5つでも、母音の種類が日本語標準語とは異なるも

This slide shows "new" Kana-letters or symbols used in some dialects.
Aspirated [ka][ki][ku][ke][ko] with “ > “ diacritic, and
Nasalized [pa][pi][pu][pe][po] with “ ~ “ diacritic.
We added hundreds of "new" Kana-letters to the Japanese Kana
system.
Yes, it appears that we added hundreds of “new” kana-letters.
However, they are not completely new and unfamiliar letters to the Ryukyuan
language speakers.
We added five diacritics that combines with the existing kana-letters to
express most of the unique Ryukyuan sounds.
For example, the aspirated consonants are written with the standard letters
with the ">" diaclitic, while the nasalized syllables are expressed with the
standard letters with the "~" diaclitic, as shown in the slide.
Thus, the “new” characters are not completely new and unfamiliar to

By using this writing system, the Ryukyuan language you saw in the
video was written like this.

とはいえ、数百の新しい文字を追加したように見えますが、実際は、琉球諸語話
者にとって、完全に新しくて馴染みのない文字を追加したわけではありません。

号を追加することで表現しています。

19 young researchers were involved in building this "Unified Writing
System."
The total number of the researchers of Ryukyuan Languages is not so
large. So, it's safe to say that most young researchers of Ryukyuan
languages took part in this project.
I will now show you some materials in which this writing system is used.
これらが標準語で使わない文字です。
この表記法は、20代から40代の若手研究者19人で作りました。琉球語の
研究者というのはそれほどたくさん世の中にいません。つまり、若手の言
語研究者のかなりの割合がこの表記法にかかわったということになります。
現在までにこの表記法が使われて作られた辞書などをお示しします。

19. Playing cards of Yonaguni Ryukyuan (2016)

These are Yonaguni Ryukyuan playing cards. In Japanese, we call these
cards "Karuta."
If you look at this, you can see a letter which is not used in standard
Japanese.
When I suggested this writing system in 2015, I knew it would be
necessary to also make digital fonts next. These days we often don’t
write by hand. If you don't have a tool with which you can type your
language on digital media, your language is vulnerable, or very weak.
You cannot search in your language on the web.
In order to overcome such a digital divide that the Ryukyuan Languages
currently face, four of us conducted a "Shima Shotai" project.
これは与那国語のかるたです。ここに標準日本語では使わない文字が使わ
れていますね。
この表記法を2015年に提案した段階で、次にフォントを作る必要がある
と思いました。今は手書きの時代ではありません。電子的に読み書きがで

"Shima Shotai" is made by customizing "Yu Shotai" which is used
standardly in many computers. As we all know, the typeface design is
excellent.
In addition, "Shima Shotai" includes not only Ryukyuan Kanas but also
the standard Japanese Kanas. If you mix Japanese and Ryukyuan
languages in the same book, it looks very good.
”しま書体”は既存のコンピューターに搭載されている游書体のカスタム書
体です。したがって、デザイン面の信頼性は言うまでもありません。
そして、琉球諸語用の独特な記号を使った仮名文字と、日本語にもあるよ
うな游書体の仮名文字の両方を搭載しており、これらを混ぜても見栄えが
悪くなりません。

Let me explain the characteristics of "Shima Shotai."
Firstly, Kana letters of “Shima Shotai” are inputted with alphabet keys,
@@just like we type the Standard Japanese,@@
and then Kana letters are displayed through ligature. We don't use IME.
This is because Kana letters unique to Ryukyuan languages are not
registered in Unicode.
By making use of ligature, we can easily type such Kana letters with a
standard keyboard.
このフォントの特徴について説明します。
まず、入力方式については、＠＠日本語のローマ字打ちと同様に＠＠アル
ファベットで入力し、リガチャーによって仮名文字が表示される仕様に
なっています。IMEは使いません。これは、標準日本語にはない文字、
Unicode登録のない記号であっても標準的なキーボードで打ちやすくする
ためです。

In Japan, vertical writing is often preferred to horizontal writing.
This is because vertical writing is a classic style and
still a common way of writing the newspaper and the novels.
We tried to make fonts which can be used both in vertical writing and
horizontal writing.
However, the first prototype didn’t work properly.
We found the prototype horizonal fonts do not work as vertical fonts
especially in Microsoft Word.
So we decided to make two separate set of fonts; one for horizontal,
and the other for vertical writing.

The number of fontsets had to be doubled.
We have “Shima Gothic” and “Shima Mincho” each with separate
horizontal and vertical fonts.
These vertical fonts are rotated by 90 degrees in advance, and by doing
so, can be displayed vertically.
このために作成するフォントセットの数が当初予定の倍になりました。
しま書体には明朝体とゴシック体がありますが、ここの縦書き横書きの区
別が予定より増えたということです。
実は、この縦書き用のフォントについては最初から90度ひっくり返してあ
るフォントなんです。それによって縦書き表示を可能にしています。

We understand that “Shima Shotai” is not able to be used in some
applications.
There is no problem in Text format, or in Adobe products.
Unfortunately, ligature does not work in Excel and Power Point.

If you want to use it in Microsoft Word, you need a template file.
＠＠It is not yet general operation that adding fonts in the applications
for smartphones. So, using “Shima Shotai” in smartphones is not easy＠

このフォントはすべてのアプリで使えるわけではありません。テキスト形
式やAdobe社製品は大丈夫なのですが、Excel、PowerPointでは使用でき
ません。

However, we decided to use ligature from the two reason.
One is, as I said before, for making it easier to input with a standard keybord.
The other is that we refrained from giving letters arbitorary Unicodes.
In order to make “Shima Shotai” free from these restrictions.
By producing results, both in academic use and in general use, we want to
achieve Unicode registration and then contribute to endangered languages.＠

起因しているわけですが、。
私たちがリガチャーを採用した理由というのは、先に述べた通り標準的なキー
ボードで打ちやすくすることと、独自に勝手なUnicodeを割り当てないことを両
立するためです。
私たちは、これらの制限を改善するため、この取り組みを広げて使用実績とし、
将来的に正式にUnicode申請をしていくことなどで、研究利用と民間利用の両方
を広げていき、消滅危機言語が残るような取り組みに貢献したいと考えていま
す。

On the whole, Unicode registration is our next goal.
We can achieve registration by showing the extent to which the writing
system and fonts are used.
