Betsy Ross was an upholsterer in Philadelphia who is widely credited with designing and sewing the first American flag. In 1776, George Washington and two members of the Continental Congress visited Ross and asked her to sew a new flag for the nation. Ross agreed and created the first American flag with 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a blue canton.
