3. Genre- thriller
conventions
- lead protagonist
- threat
- victim and perpetrator
- anticipation
- chase, action, peril and danger
- the antagonist makes their revenge against protagonist
4. Strong female protagonist
- our opening title sequence includes the
conventional theme of having a strong female
protagonist who is taking revenge on the
women that cheat with her husband.
- In our opening title sequence the protagonist is
Cassie who is under the illusion that her
husband is cheating on her. Therefore she
takes revenge and kills the husbands
suspected new girlfriend.
5. The ‘sweet’ looking girl is a villain
Love Quinn from You
Sally from Eye for an Eye
Carrie White from Carrie
6. Moments in films where the wife finds out she has been cheated on and takes revenge
7. The
‘Younger’
lady
- In lots of media genre’s, the portrayal of an older
man going for a younger girl is a common theme.
In most cases the man either cheats or leaves his
current wife for a new, younger, fun girl.
- In our title sequence we see the wife’s complex
illusions that her husband is cheating on her. He
is dinning with a much younger girl than the
s. wife, portraying that thats his
m. motivation to find a new girl. In
k one of the scenes you see the
hush husband introduce his son to the
ne new girlfriend showing that he is
red. ready to start a new life with her.

8. Analysing the camera shots
Close up shots
Close up of the victim about
to be be harmed by the
protagonist taking revenge.
The close up is forbidding to
the audience that the victim
is going to be effected
The close up of the
perpetrator emphasised to
the audience that they are
going to inflict the damage.
Normally in these shots you
can see a weapon involved,
communing the violence that
will occur. In both Fatal
Attraction and our sequence
you see the protagonists
violently taking revenge on
their lovers partner.
9. Analysing the camera shots
Both of these mid shots show the
‘blonde’ wife finding out who their
husbands are cheating with a younger
brunette. In both cases the wives are
suspecting that their husbands are
cheating as in our sequence it is all an
illusion. In Home Sweet Hell, the lady
has a smug look on her face to show
that she knows where as, in My Love,
the wife gives them both a death
stare.
Mid-shots:
In these mid shots you can clearly
see the husband getting drawn in by
the new ladies. In My Love, the
husband is introducing his son to his
new girlfriend which makes the wife
go mad. In the other film, the lady is
trying to get the husbands attention
at a pool party and at work. Both of
the ladies have no loyalties towards
the wives which leads the wife’s to
take revenge.
10. Analysing the mise en scene
At the beginning of both of the
sequences there is an establishing shot
of the location and helps the audience to
understand what time of day the
sequence will occur in. In the program
Heartbeat it is set in the countryside and
in a small village. We wanted our
sequence to have a small countryside
village feel as we wanted the rest of the
film to branch out and include city
locations.
The weather is also a really
important aspect to our sequence as
it set’s the scene. As are genre is a
thriller drama, I think that the police
will get involved in the rest of the
film. Heartbeat is a program about a
small countryside police department
who solve the murders and
problems that occur in the village.
We chose Shere as our location as
its a small village which includes
both a pub and a cafe.

11. Analysing the mise en scene
Costume
Costume:
The wife: middle age clothing, a scarf. We put her in a long coat as that type of clothing is
usually worn by a lady over 40. We wanted to portray to the audience that even though
somebody doesn’t look genetically scary, they still could commit crimes. That is one of the
reasons that we chose Nikki to play the wife as she doesn’t look ‘scary’.
The Husband: for the husband we dressed him in regular basic clothing. We wanted him to
wear plain clothing so that it makes the wife stand out. However, we wanted him to look
casual and smart as he is going on a date. On the shoot day we told Adam to wear clothing
that he would wear on a weekend as he is around the age range that we wanted to portray to
the audience.
The lover: we wanted to show a vast difference between the wife and the lover to show that
the husband has gone out of his way to find a younger lady to cheat on his wife with. We
dressed freya in a red and blue sweatshirt which is normally worn by people around the age
of 20. In the end scene we put her in a small t shirt to contrast to her casual outfit before. We
also put blood on her top to show that she has been attacked by the wife.
The child: for the child we had him in his school uniform as we wanted to portray a normal
child that is meeting a lady after school. We had teddy reading a book and talking to the
others which made the scene look natural.
12. Analysing the mise en scene
Lighting
Lighting
Red lighting is used by many
different genres of film to either
portray love or death. In our
case, we wanted to use red
lighting to forebode the death of
the husbands lover. We also
used red lighting to create a
warehouse look which has been
only lit by by a single light. I
think that the red light is also
very useful as it creates
shadows on the actors. We had
the light facing towards the
victim making her stand out and
look more vulnerable. For the
wife, we had her stand infant of
the light making her look like a
silhouette and have the light
reflect onto the bat.
13. Analysing the editing
In thrillers, a conventional theme that occurs in lots of them is having someone
as an illusion or missing. In our sequence we have edited two of the scenes to
make the lady look as if she under the illusion that her husband is cheating on
her. This is a common theme in thriller to due the fact that people like the
suspense of thinking “where have they gone” and they also like being scared
and having a mystery. Whilst filming our sequence we got Nikki to do this
scene twice, Once with the table empty and the next one with the family sitting
at the table. This meant that when we edited them together, we were under the
illusion that she was imagining the people in her mind.
14. Analysing the sound
The use music in thriller films are used to build stress
and tension for the audience. We used the
soundtrack Babushka by Kate Bush as the whole
song is building up to the chorus. This way we made
it parallel to the action in our sequence. The whole of
the first part is hitting to the audience that the wife is
mad and suspecting that her husband is cheating on
her. When the chorus happens, the action also
changes. The chorus is happening when you see the
husband lover tied up and killed by the wife. The
melancholy, intense soundtrack is used to help the
audience feel emotionally attached to the characters
in the scene. Panic Rooms most famous soundtrack
is also used for suspense towards the audience. It
meant to build tension until the climax.
15. Conventions of an opening title sequence
- character introduction and titles
Comparing both our
production title to ‘No
Time to Die’ titles.
Every opening title sequence should contain a title stating the production company or group. The production group does the
producing for every type of media on television. They work out where filming is going to take place, they cast who will be
acting, they work out the cost of everything in total and they make sure that everything stays to the schedule and not run over
time. In most cases the production group gets its own title so it can get the recognition that it deserves. For our opening title
sequence we named our company “Mallard Production group” as we thought that was a name easily remembered. In the ‘No
Time to Die’ production title, they worked with ‘Albert R. Broccoli’s eon productions LTD’ who’s parent organisation is Danjaq.
They are the current producers of all the James Bond films.
16. What social issues are presented in our
sequence?
- Female power
- Men wanting a much younger girlfriend
- Husband cheating
- Violence
- Obsession
17. How are they represented through
Camera?
HUSBAND CHEATING
HUSBAND WANTS YOUNGER GIRLFRIEND
VIOLENCE
- Mid shot of the reflection of the wife looking
through a window seeing her husband cheat.
She is edited to be in focus but the husband
is out of focus showing that he is trying to be
hidden.
- Wide shot of the husband on a date with
a younger lady. In this shot you can see
that they are laughing together and having
drinks. The lady has her coat on the back
of her chair with communicates to the
audience that they have been there for a
long time.
- In this scene the lady is being
violently hurt by the wife because
she was on a date with her
husband. The red LED lighting
creates an uneasy atmosphere. You
can see that the lady has bruises on
her face and her hands are tied up.
