3. The Meaning
• Difficult to fully get a grasp of the meaning behind Finn Harry’s
groundbreaking new song but from the lyrics I can tell it’s… Wait for it…
Wait for it… A girl! Who falls in love with heartthrob Harold and then
suffers some kind of mental breakdown because they can’t be together and
all this romance has got young 23 year Harold in a bit of an old kafuffle.
• Basically a messy relationship of young love that left them both with some
scars.
Cause it’s the way that you get off -
got me sentimental,
sending pictures just to fuck me up.
We could take this way too far,
but I don’t really wanna start if we won’t know when to stop -
I think growing up is tearing us apart
Now she start breaking down because of me
That shit don’t make no sense at 23
So Imma go and set it off
I been down way too long
I don’t know how you can still
act so natural
when you’re still trapped inside the fallout, the fallout
4. The Genre
• Well apart from the immutable fact that Finn Harry is a true musical
maestro and prodigy his genre is often referred to as timeless.
• But in actuality its just alternative/indie rock and pop
5. The idea…
• The music video follows a more thematic style and revolves around
an angsty teenager who feels as if they’re world is falling apart, and
they can’t escape it.
• The video focuses on this teenager who is the singer and explores this
main theme through the visuals on screen.
• The song itself has a lot of tempo shifts and breakdowns that can be
played with and used to mark the various visuals.
• However, there is a slight comedy to the visuals we are seeing, an
obscurity of the teenager, at times a shapelessness. And at times the
visuals representing their lostness are lighthearted compared to his
actual state of mind.
8. The Cast
• The video focuses solely on the teenager and majority of the video is spent
by themselves with visuals involving various extras, for example the crowd
section.
• The actor who plays this must be versatile and a have a little background in
music as the lip-syncing for this video and its tempo can be jaunted and
challenging at times. The teenager is dead-pan quite a lot of the time,
mouthing the words emotionlessly which juxtaposes the light and happy go
lucky visuals around them, but equally there are moments of darkness and
angst to reflect the true state of mind.
• The teenager at this point is genderless but potentially Luke or Gee, not
familiar with lots of the A1 or their names.
9. Performance
• Covered this a bit in last slide, again one main character but we will
need a group of extras the performance needs to capture this
alternative indie style of rock and pop which is full of angst and
attitude. But perhaps linking the artist to mental health and the
struggle of the modern teenager who can’t seem to grasp the reality
and complexities of life and the cognitive dissonance that occurs from
this.
• We won’t need instruments. Music video focuses on the performance
and visuals.
10. Narrative
• Narrative is told thematically and explored through performance and
visuals but through this the wider narrative of the star persona and
what they represent becomes abstractly apparent. High Brow stuff
mate, Need a high IQ, big brain to understand you get me.
• But Yeah, the visuals do need to be fined down and make succinct so
that the message is truly put across, but I believe it is very
manageable to explore the difficulty of feeling stuck in one place as
life and your problems go rushing past and around you through these
visuals.
11. The style
Smart style that seems to subvert the
chaos and disordered style of the
teenager's life. Suit implies preparation,
confidence, importance, and direction as if
one is dressing to impress. Something the
teenager is struggling to find, direction
through the chaos.
OR
Potential to play into alternative style, the
subversion of gender stereotypes through
clothes, this undefined style reflects this
misdirection seen in the teenagers life, again
playing with liminal states.
12. The structure
• Opening shot – Lights slowly come up on teenager, dark moody tones
face is partly in darkness as they mouth the opening words of the
song.
• 20 sec in … Change of shot as beat kicks in and lights suddenly come
up to reveal a colourful set with teenager in the middle on chair
looking deadpan into camera. During this shot he gets up, camera
movement is jolted but following his movement
• 40 sec in … Guitar kicks in change to first visual, him behind water
tank obscured face mouthing along. “She breaking down because of
me, shit don’t make sense at 23”
