Introduction to SEO, Google
AdWords, and Google Analytics
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and
Google AdWords are the two primary ways
websites can increase their visibility on
Google. This means that businesses interest-
ed in achieving greater online exposure need
to implement SEO and AdWords campaigns.
Moreover, it is crucial to analyze site visits
data to detect what is working in an organ-
ization’s online marketing initiatives, and
where there is room for improvement: that
is where Google Analytics comes in. Geared
towards professionals and small businesses,
this course will teach the fundamentals
of SEO, Google AdWords campaigns, and
interpretation of Google Analytics reports.
You will have the opportunity to work on
real-life examples in a group setting. Good
computer skills are required. Some experi-
ence with basic website administration or

See p 23 for details.
12. 22 Registration information on page 31 23
Our Awards of Achievement are designed to recognize and reward your accom-
plishments in a particular area of study. The award is an official acknowledgment
that you have completed a set number of courses and requirements at Capilano
University Continuing Studies.
The fine print—or how to earn an Award of Achievement:
Each Award of Achievement will have slightly different completion requirements,
but all will involve completing a designated mix of core and elective courses to
be completed within a specified time frame (usually courses must be completed
within two calendar years). The intent to pursue an Award of Achievement must
be declared by the end of the first term in which you take a course that can be
applied to the award. Additionally, there will be assignment and attendance
requirements.
How many Awards of Achievement are available?
We plan on launching several Awards of Achievement in the future. For now,
there is only one available—but it’s a good one: the Award of Achievement in
Applied Digital Communications & Social Media (see next page for details).
Why should I care about the Award of Achievement?
The Awards of Achievement focus on skill-sets that are relevant and in demand.
As such, they look great on a resume, and demonstrate to employers that you
have a broad competence in whichever area your award is in.
Awards of Achievement
ANNOUNCING OUR NEW
To launch the Award of Achievement program, we’ve selected Digital Communications & Social Media as the
focus. It’s an area that is not only in high demand right now, but is set to expand as digital technologies are
enjoying explosive growth (think content marketing, apps, video and more).
Relevant, in-demand skills
Since digital communications skills and social media expertise are sought after in virtually every industry, our
Applied Digital Communications & Social Media Award of Achievement is relevant to anyone—regardless of
what career you currently work in. And because our courses take a hands-on approach, you can put your new
knowledge to use immediately.
The courses:
The courses that comprise the Award of Achievement in Digital
Communications & Social Media are broken down into Core courses
and Electives. You must complete five courses (all core courses plus
two electives within a specified time frame). Courses are 10 to 15 hours
in length and vary from four to six sessions:

Extraordinary People: The Craft of
Character Creation
Most readers look for stories about inter-
esting people doing fascinating things in
the most surprising of ways they’ll always
remember (as opposed to stories about
ordinary people doing ordinary things in
the most ordinary ways they’ll soon forget).
Designed for writers of any skill level, this
course shows you how to populate your fic-
tion with compelling and memorable people,
both heroic and villainous (and everything
in between). Through a combination of
lectures, in-class exercises, discussion and
homework, you’ll learn to create believable
characters your readers will care about by
not only exploring the best ways to drama-
tize how they look, feel, think, and talk, but
also by what they believe, want, and do.

Writing Brilliant, Engaging and
BELIEVABLE Dialogue NEW!
You could have a great plot, but if the people
in your story sound like robots reading from
your outline the audience can’t connect.
Dialogue is a delicate art within the craft,
and involves a keen ear, a sense of rhythm,
a grasp of story-logic and an understanding
of subtext. By studying examples from vari-
ous works and practising in-class and doing
assignments at home, you will first gain an
understanding of what effective dialogue is,
and then learn to create it. By the end of the
course, you will know how to write dialogue
“from the inside out”; distinguish between
“real” and “interesting” dialogue; engage in
eavesdropping to “hone the ear”; practise
writing like an actor (using objectives and
tactics); understand the difference between
“story logic” and “character logic”; and use
value shifts to heighten intensity. You are
encouraged to bring a desire to learn and
experiment. This course is relevant for new
as well as experienced writers.

Courses designed primarily for
recreational or general interest
purposes are subject to applicable
taxes.
AVOID CANCELLATIONS — REGISTER EARLY
Courses that don’t meet the minimum number of participants get
cancelled. That’s why we encourage you to register early. Course
cancellation decisions are usually made two weeks before the
course starts, so it’s a good idea to register before then.
