What is Projection Mapping?
Projection Mapping uses everyday video projectors, but instead of projecting on a
flat screen (e.g. to display a PowerPoint), light is mapped onto any surface, turning
common objects of any 3D shape into interactive displays.
More formally, projection mapping is “the display of an image on an arbitrarily
complex surface”.
Projection mapping can be used for advertising, live concerts, theater, gaming,
computing, decoration and anything else you can think of. Specialized software or
just some elbow grease can be used to align the virtual content and the physical
objects.
Projection mapping can be used on buildings to advertise, entertain or inform
your audience.

How does 3D Projection Mapping work
The technique of 3D Projection Mapping works on the concept of wrapping and
blending the projected image so that the image could be superimposed on target
surface area or object with three dimensional visuals/displays.
It doesn’t mean that the technique replaces the source object completely, it rather
superimposes projected image on it with 3D visual output.
The resolution and brightness levels must be used properly so that the projected
image has optimum display visuals. Sometimes, the poor visual situation occurs on
account of poor projection mapping whereby edge-blending projection mapping
technology is resorted to fix the visible band caused by the poorly done mapping.

How to make a video mapping projection
Projection mapping uses a combination of four factors working in unison to create
the visual experience:
Content (the visuals that are projected)
Projection Hardware (the equipment that is doing the projecting)
Surface (The Building – any size)
Mapping (the technical aspects of conforming the projection onto the building)
The most important thing you need is, obviously, a video projector.
The video projector need to be powerful if the area to cover is that of a building.
For little objects and for room projection you need a basic 15K lumens so to have a good
definition of your work.
But you will need up to 30K lumens to produce a clear, accurate image on a big surface and/or
from a long distance.
