21. Case 1: TAKAWIRI Craft Enterprises (Kisumu County)
• Uses water hyacinth from L. Victoria and re-cycled
waste paper to make business cards, book covers,
envelopes and gift bags.
• production - eco-friendly, no chemicals are used &
water recycled several times. Uses solar energy -
renewable.
• Manages 28 tonnes of water hyacinth p.m; invasive
species in Lake Victoria.
• Annual Business Turnover: 18 million p.a.; with a
projected growth rate of 10% p.a.
• Currently employs over 5 people.

23. Case 2: Art Youth Research Centre (Uasin Gishu County)
A youth group (former street
children) who turn waste into

25. Case 4: Water Harvesting and Fish Farming (Kericho County)
Project is on water harvesting,

26. Case 5: Aqualine distributors (Machakos County)
Stanley Kirui started the project
that recycles waste tyres to

27. Case 6: Briquette Making (Kiambu County)
• Produces 1 ton /day and yet demand is high e.g.
primary customer BATA needs 10 tons/day
• Employees 5 ->12 with potential for more.
• NETFUND to improved his machinery to produce
more efficiently .
• Current drying is rudimentary – relies on weather.
NETFUND to explore green house protection and
other drying methods.
• Main raw material is saw dust & maize cobs. Want
to explore others e.g. rice and coffee husks
• Generates 300K P.M & uses 75 tonnes of sawdust
p.m

29. Case 7: Biodiesels Kenya (Nairobi County)
• Problem: Clogging of drainage system in
urban centers due to waste oils from
hotels; sanitation and health probs.
• The Biodiesel project seeks to
reconstitute waste vegetable oil from
restaurants/hotels into a renewable and
environmentally friendly product –
biodiesel.
• With support from NETFUND the
innovator has registered a company (
Biocycles Kenya Limited) based in
Nairobi , developed a business plan and
conducted a market assessment.
• Product tested on a tuktuk and is viable.
To get a big bioreactor.
• Employs 5; developed clean cookstove.
30. Case 8: John Magiro, Rural Electrification
• John Magiro made his first
turbine out of wood when in
standard three in primary
school. Since then he has not
stopped innovating.
• The innovator uses recycled
bicycle parts to make a
fabricated turbine that is
producing 240 KW (from
7.5KW) of power.
• Magiro is currently supplying
75 households with electricity
@100 P.M
• NETFUND to help him supply
more households. His dream

The NETFUND Green Innovations Award is working within a model that enables economic growth while enhancing sustainability and promoting social inclusion. This award focuses on changing the perception that economic growth cannot go hand in hand with environmental conservation. Conserving the environment requires great capital investment. It is therefore important that we strike a balance between stimulating economic growth while conserving the environment.

Ecofuels – acceleration – Croton nut.Eco Fuels Kenya (Ltd) has developed the final prototype briquette made from Croton megalocarpus tree nuts as a by-product. The Croton nuts are first pressed to extract biodiesel then the waste product is processed into an energy briquette. The prototype was developed with their first tranche of the GIA award money.
