          Reputation Mechanisms

                       Kick-off Meeting

             Brussels, 21-22 December 2011

                            Ian Brown (OXF)

                                                 Network of
     FP7-ICT-2011.1.6-288021 EINS Excellence in
                                              Internet Science
WP Objectives
 Integrate and develop research on distributed social
nets (eg Diaspora and Footlights), partial identities
    (PrimeLife), privacy-protective sensor networks
    (FRESNEL), privacy beliefs and behaviours
(PVNets), online trust and reputation mechanisms
 Integrate research efforts, scientific concepts and
    methodologies from computer science, psychology,
    anthropology, sociology, political science, statistics,
graph theory, behavioural economics and law
 Investigate trade-offs between anonymity and
accountability, and how decentralized systems can
protect against spam, offensive content and criminal
activities, while creating trusted mechanisms for
online interaction based on reputation systems

        EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
WP Tasks
 Task R5.1 A data protection assessment
framework – UPMC (Pol Sci), OXF (Internet
Studies, Anth), WARW (Econ), UESSEX (Law), UoS
    (CS), UiO (Law), NEXA (Law)
 Task R5.2 Analysis of privacy, reputation and
trust in social networks – UoS (Maths), OXF
(Internet Studies, Anth), ULANC (Sociology), UCAM
(CS), TUM (CS), EPFL (CS), TUD (CS), KNAW
    (Sociology, STS), CERTH (CS, Psych)
 Task R5.3 Developing a roadmap for privacy
techniques for the Internet of Things, clouds and
sensor networks – OXF (Internet Studies, Anth),
TUM (CS), EPFL (CS), PASSAU (CS), CERTH (CS)

        EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
R5.1 A DP assessment framework
 Analyse compliance of emerging sensing,
social nets, search and cloud technologies
  with EU DP rules.
 Define privacy criteria and an assessment
  framework for scientific researchers,
  technology designers, regulators and users
  of such technologies and applications
 Assess the extent to which the EU DP
framework takes sufficient account of the
technical and social realities of Internet-
  based transactional platforms

     EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
R5.2 Privacy, reputation and trust in SNS
 analyse current practices in user privacy in social
network (e.g. decentralization, data obfuscation), to
compare them with privacy practice in real life, and
to identify technologically sophisticated and socially
    well-anchored solutions
 investigate the exploitation of user-user trust
relationship for enabling user privacy, including
behavioural analysis, social norms and encryption
 take stock from existing activities in this area, identify
areas for further research between the different
disciplines involved, and pursue innovative research
in order to become a point of reference

         EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
R5.3 Privacy for IoT, cloud + sensor nets
 Develop a roadmap for privacy-enabling
mechanisms in embedded sensors in user
house and mobile devices for health-care,
  environmental conservation, etc.
 Analyse privacy trade-offs,
  communication/processing overhead and
  data inaccuracy/unavailability for these
  mechanisms
 Develop a roadmap for technical
  countermeasures, which ensure the location
  privacy of an entity
     EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
WP Action List for the 1st Year
 An initial assessment of Internet Privacy,
  Identity, Trust and Reputation mechanisms
based also on the research results of an
organised workshop by JRA5 on these
  topics, combining frameworks from political
  science, computer science, Internet studies,
economics and law into a unified “Internet
Science” view of the field [month 12]
 Reports on integration and excellence
  building [month 15]

      EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
Interdependencies with other WPs
 JRA2 (incorporating privacy by design).
 JRA4 (governance and regulation,
  particularly the EU data protection
  framework)
 JRA6 (allowing users to participate in virtual
  communities without over-exposing their
  personal data)
 JRA8 (where users must be reassured that
  energy-saving technology is not invading
  their privacy)
      EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
WP Impact
 The basic goal of Internet Science for
privacy and identity should be to find the
 right combination of autonomy (solving
security and privacy issues a user cannot
resolve) and user control, in a way that is
comprehensible and likely to be accepted.

     EINS Kick-off Meeting Brussels, December 21-22, 2011
Issues to be discussed and decided
