3. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 3
PARES 2.0 is the new version of the Spanish Archives Portal, that was born in 2007.
And in September of 2016 was presented the Beta version as PARES 2.0, that it is available at
http://pares.mcu.es
http://bit.ly/2ddDUVX
PARES is a Network for the electronic management of the 8 Spanish State Archives, and for the
spreading of their Archival information from an unique point of access in Internet.
We establish the Archival Digital Strategy of PARES in the following points:
To reflect the new Spanish Archival Description Model (NEDA since 2015), and this
differentiates the information system between documentary and non-documentary entities.
PARES is the platform to contribute with Archival quality contents to APE and EUROPEANA.
Through MONASTERIUM.net we contribute with medieval Spanish parchments to be collected
by the European Archives Portal.
To provide solutions for strategies of Multilingualism and Georeferencing of the archival data
bases.
PARES 2.0 works now in the way to be an Open and Linked Data tool, which will also provide
solutions to the Semantic Web and Big Data needs.
One of the main next step will be the connection with the eGovernment: from the managing of
Historical physical records to the Historical digital documents.

Opening PARES 2.0 in Internet
In PARES 2.0 all the items are disponibles on Internet Searching Tools.
5. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 5
• Actually, in the digital context, users of Archival institutional
portals demand even more access to the 100% of the data and
information contained within Records.
• So, the Open Data culture bring us closer our Archives to the
Citizen.
• Now, with PARES 2.0 all the Archival Data Base is available to be
“fished” through the main searching tools in Internet.
• In this example we look for a XVIth century writer Miguel de
Cervantes. At Google, for example, we can link with the concrete
documents as to the list of results of the search engine of PARES.
6. New Searching Interface 1
ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 6

7. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 7
PARES 2.0 offers to citizens, researchers and all kind of users its new Search Interface.
As I told before, this new Interface is divided between to specialized searching tools: one to
search Records (documentary entities) and other for Standardized Authorities and Key Words
(non documentary entities).
Searching by Records we benefit from the following tools:
2 cliks to item or digital object.
Search suggestions.
General and Advanced Searching tool.
Reorderable list of results.
Faceted Filters.
Stable and linkeable URL, to use in our electronic quotations.
All items and digital objects are downloadable and exportable.
And an interesting Researcher personal Agenda o Folder.
The searching by non-documentary Entities (Authorities and Key Terms):
The possibility to find linked information to and between Creators, Families or Institutions, and to Key
terms.
In the case of the Authors Authorities as writers or politicians, PARES 2.0 offers you “Digital
biographies”, which combine linked data from primary archival sources with secondary bibliography
data.
Is possible the translation to different languages of the Archival Authorities. And also they can be
thesaurized.
Georeferenced Key Terms as Place names, or monuments as a Cathedral.
PARES 2.0 draws the related Family Functions in a graph.
8. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 8
Archival Authorities : Digital Biographies
From Authority or Key Term
to Archives where data are
spread; and to Records.
Linked data:
• Family relations.
• Info sources.
• Books he was Author.
• Occupations: as soldier,
writer, poet.
Geolocated data:
• Places where he lived
9. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 9
This is the Archival Authority item of Miguel the Cervantes, it is a good
example of a “Digital biography”:
Other forms of the name of Cervantes which are and is known.
Professions that Cervantes exercised as writer, soldier or poet.
Georeferenced Places where he lived.
Books he wrote.
Secondary bibliographical and Digital references.
Other related Authorities or Key Terms in PARES.
So from a single item as this, PARES takes you to the set of documents
related with this writer distributed by different Archives.
11. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 11
What to say about Multilingualism? PARES 2.0 offers you some
strategies.
First of all, it is possible to get the translation of the
navigation web pages adapting our navigation
software. The translation is done on the fixed
contents, the items of the database of PARES are
offered in Spanish language.
12. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 12
Multilingual Strategy 2:
Translation of items fields as “History / Biography” on ISAAR (CPF) – Authorities
Last
Friday!
13. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 13
The second Multilingual strategy consists of the
translation from Spanish in to English language of the
content of the field “History and Biography” of the ISAAR-
CPF / EAC Formulary, as in this example appears.
14. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 14
Multilingual Strategy 3
Multilingual Searchings: Esp, Fra, Eng and Spanish co-officers national Languagues:
Basq, Cat, Gal, Val.
15. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 15
The Third multilingual strategy is this.
I. At the Documents Search searcher, there is a tool to
search Key Terms (Persons, Subjects, Places, ...) which
it is possible to ask to PARES in other languages
different to Spanish: as English, French and co-officers
languages in Spain as Basque-Eusk., Catalonian,
Galician or Valencian.
II. PARES shows you the equivalent Spanish term of the
database to link to the related records. In this
example: “slavery” (eng.) and “esclavitud” (esp).
III. So users and specialized researchers from other
cultural contexts can interrogate in PARES if there is
information related with their subjects of researching.
It is one single step more in our strategy of opening
Spanish Archives to other cultures.
17. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 17
At PARES 2.0 the Standardized Authorities can be
thesaurized, and also translated to other languages.
This is an example related to the Subject “Codices”,
meaning handwritten books. The categories are
increasing and updated in any moment, reflecting
the descriptions plans of the Archival Staff in real
networking. New materials described can contribute
with new data in any moment.
18. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 18
Multilingual Stratergy 4
Admiral of Castile [Authority]
Basque language
19. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 19
This example is the Authority formulary for “Admiral of
Castile” (eng.), translated into Basque-Eusk. Language:
“Gaztelako amiralak” = “Almirante de Castilla” (esp.).
20. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 20
Multilingual Stratergy 4
Asylum in Church [Authority]
Catalonian language
21. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 21
And this other example is about the translation of
“Asylum in Church” (eng.) into Catalonian
language: “Acollir-se a sagrat” = “Acogerse a
sagrado”, “Asilo eclesiástico” (esp.)
22. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 22
What occurs when Archival Functions are combined with
related data?
Next
Isabella I, Queen of Castile (Authority Item – ISAAR_CPF > EAC-CPF)
Ancestors and Descendants (Family relation: Genealogy)
Predecessors and Successors (Institutional Funcion)
23. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 23
The tools of PARES 2.0 for description tasks also offers
the possibility to draw in a digital graphic the linked
relations between Authority of Person as the Queen
Isabella of Castile one.
Here we can see the relations of antecessor in the
institutional function of Queen and King. PARES can also
draw the parallel relationship corresponding to Family
relations.
So PARES 2.0 is working in the way to create Digital
Genealogical Threes and Functional Schemas.
24. At PARES 2.0, Primary Digital Sources are ready to be used and
re-used
ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 24
on Social Networks (Twitter, Facebook)Researchers Agenda
@ArchivosEst
To Save my researching results list of
PARES.
I can manage and export my items.
PARES helps me with remembering
if success any actualization of my
items stored.
25. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 25
All the items of the PARES database are able to be used
and reused.
One of the strategies is to export to our Social Networks
–as Twitter or Facebook- any item or digital object.
PARES provides automatically the main metadata and
link.
The Agenda for Researchers at PARES it is also a very
useful tool to save our researching results. PARES
automatically updates the results list if new records are
published.
26. ICARUS meeting #20 - PARES 26
Our View
PARES 2.0 wants to be an Open Archives & Files
system that interoperates with other library and
museum information systems.
Actually, we link to Resources from other Cultural
Institutions like Libraries or Museums.
In Spanish State Archives we work to unite and unify
our common documentary heritage with that of
other European cultural institutions.
27. Thanks for your kind attention!
