Meeting the needs of the present without compromising  the ability  of future generations to meet  their own needs
Museums enhance the quality of life of everyone,  both today and in the future Museums are in the sustainability business
Social Economic Environmental Triple-bottom line
Use better lighting  80% Encourage greener travel  80% Change staff behaviour  (“switch it off”)  70% Reuse and recycle,  especially of display materials  60%   Have flexible collections-care  requirements and  use air conditioning less  45%
Use local, green and fair trade suppliers  75% Partnerships with local organisations  45% Consult and involve community  45% Offer local training and skill sharing  30% Offering high quality volunteering  25% Be at heart of local community  25% Diversify workforce and volunteers  25%
Don’t do too much! Don’t work too hard! Bigger buildings, bigger collections, bigger audiences, bigger budgets OR… ‘Prosperity without growth’ Stop expanding: quality and deeper relationships more important than quantity
Paradox:  Preserving collection can damage the planet! Energy and money needed by collection must reflect the public benefits of the collection Collections need to be used enough now An asset to the future, not a burden Actively researched, displayed, shared …  smaller?
Becoming more sustainable Museums are ready to: Save energy –  Tate Modern;   Stockwood, Luton Get closer to communities –  Museum of East    Anglian Life BUT Need to think much more about their purpose
What will your museum be like in 2020 or 2030? What will it do?  What will it have in its collection? Where will it be? Who will use it?
To be more sustainable UK museums need: Investment in energy saving Plan for sustainable development not growth (triple-bottom line: planet and people)  Work with other organisations Think much more about the future

  • 3. Museums enhance the quality of life of everyone, both today and in the future Museums are in the sustainability business
  • 4. Social Economic Environmental Triple-bottom line
  • 5. Use better lighting 80% Encourage greener travel 80% Change staff behaviour (“switch it off”) 70% Reuse and recycle, especially of display materials 60% Have flexible collections-care requirements and use air conditioning less 45%
  • 6. Use local, green and fair trade suppliers 75% Partnerships with local organisations 45% Consult and involve community 45% Offer local training and skill sharing 30% Offering high quality volunteering 25% Be at heart of local community 25% Diversify workforce and volunteers 25%
  • 7. Don’t do too much! Don’t work too hard! Bigger buildings, bigger collections, bigger audiences, bigger budgets OR… ‘Prosperity without growth’ Stop expanding: quality and deeper relationships more important than quantity
  • 8. Paradox: Preserving collection can damage the planet! Energy and money needed by collection must reflect the public benefits of the collection Collections need to be used enough now An asset to the future, not a burden Actively researched, displayed, shared … smaller?
  • 9. Becoming more sustainable Museums are ready to: Save energy – Tate Modern; Stockwood, Luton Get closer to communities – Museum of East Anglian Life BUT Need to think much more about their purpose
  • 10. What will your museum be like in 2020 or 2030? What will it do? What will it have in its collection? Where will it be? Who will use it?
  • 11. To be more sustainable UK museums need: Investment in energy saving Plan for sustainable development not growth (triple-bottom line: planet and people) Work with other organisations Think much more about the future
