- Visual Fusion Experience is a set of rich user interface components available in Microsoft Silverlight. They can be deployed as SharePoint Web Parts or as standard web page components. As some 80% of enterprise information can be shown in the context of geography, VFX uses a map and timeline as the primary metaphors for interacting with, exploring, and viewing enterprise information.
- Empowering the end user is a hallmark of Visual Fusion, and one key capability the software affords is adding ad hoc content to the content already present in the application. In the Feed Control input box, users can paste URLs to geospatial web feeds or type in terms to search for through Visual Fusion Enterprise Search, Wikipedia, Flickr, Bing Local Search, or some other search engine. In all cases, the user selects an icon to represent the data returned and the results show up as a new feed at the top of the Feed Control hierarchy. Each of these ad hoc feeds has the normal controls as well as the option to delete them. If the feed has a pubdate or other recognizable date field, it will be displayed in the Timeline Viewer as well as the Map Viewer.
- After entering in your search term, a drop down menu of icon colors will appear. You can choose between red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple.
- By clicking on the icon, the image name, image submitter’s username, the image, and a “More Information” link. Clicking the “More Information” link will open the original Flickr image site in a new window. Clicking on the username will open their Flickr profile page within the Details panel.
- GeoRSS is an emerging standard for encoding location as part of an Web feed. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoRSS)
- When a tool is activated, the icon will appear dark blue, as can be seen in this shot by the “Pilot,” “Fly To,” “Scale Bar,” and “Lat Long” icons. Inactive icons appear grey.
- Clicking an icon on either the Map or Timeline will bring up information in the Details panel, as well as a “More Information” link. As an example: for this GeoRSS feed about earthquake activity from the USGS, clicking “More Information” will bring you to the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program site specific to the event clicked.
