• For the Hellenes, the dead entered the underworld by
crossing the Acheron River, pointed by Charon. They
had to pay an obolus (small coin to be put in the
mouth of the deceased). The poor without family and
friends were meeting for a hundred years on near the
bank of the river.
• The Greeks offered the possibility for the deceased to
return to the upper world to pursue those who had not
given a proper funeral. The other side of the river was
guarded by Cerberus, the three-headed dog of Hades.
